Modi Degree Controversy: Arvind Kejriwal fined with Rs.25000 by Gujarat High Court

The Gujarat High Court has ruled that the Prime Minister’s Office is not required to show Narendra Modi’s Degree and PG certificates.

Earlier, the Chief Information Commission (CIC) has directed the Public Information Officer of the Prime Minister’s Office and Gujarat University and Delhi University to provide details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree and PG certificates.

The orders were dismissed by a bench headed by Justice Biren Vaishnav. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was asked by the Right to Information to provide details of Narendra Modi’s degree.

Arvind Kejriwal has written a letter to then Chief Information Commissioner Madabhushi Sridharacharya to make Narendra Modi’s degrees public. In 2016, the Information Commission ordered to show degrees in this context. Gujarat University challenged that order in the Gujarat High Court. It said there was no public interest in giving the Prime Minister’s personal details.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Gujarat University, told the court that there is nothing to hide about Narendra Modi’s degrees and his degrees are already in the public domain.

Gujarat University argued that these details were asked through the RTI, “because of some childishness or to create an opportunity for abuse by some people”.

Arvind Kejriwal said, “Don’t the people of this country have the right to know how educated the Prime Minister is?”

The controversy over Narendra Modi’s degree certificates has been going on for a long time. There have been allegations that the certificates showing BA from Delhi University and MA from Gujarat University are not genuine and are ‘fake’.

On May 10, 2016, Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley showed copies of Narendra Modi’s degree and PG certificates. According to them, in 1978, Modi received his BA degree from Delhi University. He passed MA in Political Science from Gujarat University in 1983.

On May 11, 2016, Delhi University said that Narendra Modi’s degree certificate shown by BJP is genuine. But it revealed that the passing year was ‘1979’ which was a small error.
