Budhakedar an ancient Hindu Temple devoted to worshipping Shiva. That is the name of the village, and our pilgrimage is to Budhakedar.  

On the banks of the rivers Dham Ganga and Bal Ganga is the village of Thati. It is known as the fifth Dham after Kedarnath and is the largest shivling ever discovered in north India.  

Since they solely worship Budhakedar, the locals do not travel to Kedarnath. The only time the char dham pilgrimage is deemed successful is when you go to the budhakedar.  

Locals refer to Budhakedar, which is located around 60 kilometers by road from New Tehri, as the BoodhaKedar Temple.

BudhaKedar In Tehri 

The Pandavas were given a glimpse of Lord Shiva in Budhakedar. The Pandavas searched for Lord Shiva to atone for their misdeeds after the epic Mahabharata conflict.  

At Bhrigu Parvat, Rishi Balkhily was spotted. To find an elderly guy who was meditating there, Rishi instructed them to go to the meeting place of the two rivers. 

The old guy disappeared and a massive Shivling appeared when the Pandavas arrived there. The guru advised them to embrace the Shivling in order to atone for their past transgressions. 

The History and Legend Of BudhaKedar 

The Pandavas allegedly went outside to search for Lord Shiva during the battle of Kurukshetra during the Mahabharata era.  

At Bhrigu Parvat, where they were traveling, they ran into Rishi Balkhily. The old guy was sitting there in meditation when the rishi dispatched them to find him. 

When they arrived at the confluence, the old man disappeared, and a huge Shiv Linga materialized in his place. 

In order for the Pandavas to atone for their transgressions, Rishi Balkhily instructed them to embrace the Shiva Linga.  

They accomplished this by imprinting the Shiv Linga with their imprints. One of the largest Shiva Lingas in northern India is thought to be this one.
