Olajide Omowumi: Ismail, Ajala, one other to die by hanging for rape, murder of Unilorin student

On Tuesday, the Ilorin High Court sentenced Abdulazeez Ismail, Ajala Oluwatimileyin, and Oyeyemi Omogbolahan to death for killing and raping a 300-level University of Ilorin student named Olajide Blessing Omowumi.

The court found them guilty of killing someone and robbing someone with a gun. They were sentenced to death by hanging.

Omowumi, who would have been 26 this year, was brutally raped and killed by the people who did this.

Justice Ibrahim Yusuf, the trial judge, found Ismail, Oluwatimileyin, and Omogbolahan guilty of culpable homicide and armed robbery. Ismail, Oluwatimileyin, and Omogbolahan were the first, second, and third suspects.

The judge said, “I order Abdulazeez Ismail, Ajala Oluwatimileyin, and Oyeyemi Omogbolahan to be hung by the neck until they say they’re dead.”

The court’s decision, which was 165 pages long and took four hours to read, also gave the fourth and fifth suspects three years in prison for theft.

The sixth, seventh, and eighth suspects, Abdullateef Abdulrahman, Daud Aderayo, and Akande Oladoja, were released and found not guilty of any of the charges against them.

The body of the dead person was found in the afternoon with bruises all over it, her hands tied behind her back, and a towel over her face, according to the verdict.

The judge also said that the standard statement that could be used in court showed that the victim fought with the killers until she was pushed and fell. The first and third convicts then held her down while the second convict committed the horrible crime of rape.

He said that the woman who died was raped until she died on June 2, 2021, at her guardian’s house in the Tanke area of Ilorin. A piece of paper with the words “No forgiveness for Unilorin student” was dropped on her chest.

The judge said that Ismail, Oluwatimileyin, and Omogbolahan worked together to steal several things from the deceased, including her Samsung Galaxy A2 Core phone, a black Acer Aspire laptop, and a Samsung drive.

The people who killed the people were tried on 11 counts, including murder, rape, armed robbery, and illegal possession of guns.

After the court session, Mr. Salman Jawondo, the Prosecution Counsel and a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, told reporters that justice had caught up with the bad guys.

“The first, second, and third defendants, who are the main people to blame, were found guilty of culpable homicide punishable by death, conspiracy to commit robbery, and conspiracy to murder.

“They were sentenced to death because of this. That’s the most. Because of the Armed Robbery Act, the court has no choice but to sentence the person to death.

“So, according to Section 221 of the Penal Code, culpable homicide is punishable by death. So, they were given the death sentence.

“Even though the third defendant was also found guilty of rape and given a life sentence, that is neither here nor there. “Life in prison doesn’t change anything when someone is found guilty,” he said.

Jawondo went on to say, “The fourth and fifth defendants were found guilty of conspiring to steal and taking money from the deceased’s bank account.”

“You know, they took her ATM card, Sim card, and phone after they killed her.

“They changed her password with the help of the fourth and fifth defendants, who are experts at tampering with computers. They then got about N149,000 in transfer money from her.”

“They were found guilty of plotting to steal and stealing. So, they were both given three years in prison to run at the same time. One year for conspiracy and three years for the main crime, starting from the day they were caught.”

He also said, “They’ve already been locked up for about a year and a half.

“The sixth, seventh, and eighth people barely got away. They have a lot of luck.

“If you look at what they did, they only helped get rid of stolen property.

“It’s funny that everyone involved is a very young man, aged 19, 23, etc. He said, “It’s a shame, and it shows that we need to work on our future in this country.”
