Peter Gregory Obi (CON) was born in Onitsha on July 19th, 1961. A Nigerian businessman and politician from Anambra state who also served as a two-time Governor of the state between 2006 and 2014. In May 2022, he became the flag bearer of the Labour Party (LP) for the President of Nigeria in the upcoming 2023 presidential election after dumping his former party, PDP.

After completing his secondary education at Christ the King College, Onitsha, he proceeded to the University of Nsukka in 1980 where he studied Philosophy and later graduated with a B. A (Hons) in 1984. Thereafter, he ventures into business and banking, and by the early 2000s.

Peter Obi rose to hold numerous executive positions in Banks, some of which was the chairman of Fidelity Bank before entering politics. In 2003, Peter Obi became the flag bearer of the “All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)” for the Gubernatorial election in Anambra state and won but his main opponent, Chris Ngige of the People Democratic Party (PDP) was illegally declared the winner of the election.

This results in a legal battle between both parties but he later reclaimed his mandate after three years which enable him assumed office in March 2006. Before Peter Obi ventured into politics, he was a very Successful Businessman and also held numerous leadership positions in several top organizations and banks in Nigeria. He was the formal chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc and also, according to him, he owns and controls several International franchises such as South African International Breweries, Heinz products, Ovaltine, etc. here in Nigeria and also owns a major share in three Nigerian commercial banks and in a multinational firm called Blue Chip companies.

Peter Obi also own one of the biggest shopping centers in the FCT called “NEXT”. According to one of his interviews, he made a remark about how he started life as a trader before entering the corporate world. Peter Obi Political Career

2003 was the year Peter Obi joined politics and contested the gubernatorial election in Anambra state under the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) but his opponent, Chris Ngige of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This resulted in him going to court to seek justice and on March 15th, 2006, the cult overturned Ngige’s victory and Peter Obi regained his mandate. On November 2nd, 2006, After 7 in office, the state house of assembly impeached him, and his deputy Dame Virginia Etiaba was sworn in.

This gave birth to the first female governor in Nigeria. Peter Obi again took the matter to court to challenge the impeachment and it was successful. He was later reinstated on February 9, 2007, after winning the case.

Peter Obi once again left office on 29 May 2007 after the general election, in which Andy Uba of the PDP was declared the winner by the electoral body. Mr. Obi did not give up but returned to the court to contest that the four-year tenure he had won in the 2003 elections only started to run when he took office in March 2006. On 14 June 2007, the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld Obi’s contention and returned Obi to office.

This brought an abrupt end to the tenure of Obi’s successor, Andy Uba. The Supreme Court nullified the election on the grounds that Obi’s four-year tenure should have remained undisturbed until March 2010.

On 7 February 2010, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Peter Obi the winner of the 2010 Anambra State Gubernatorial election, where he defeated Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, former governor, CBN. This gave Governor Obi an additional four years as the governor of Anambra State. On March 17, 2014, Peter Obi handed over power to Willie Obiano. According to records, Peter Obi remained a hero in Anambra State as his tenure saw tremendous growth in various sectors of Anambra State’s economy.

After leaving office as governor, Peter Obi continue being active in politics. He was later appointed as the chairman of the Nigerian Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) by President Goodluck Jonathan. 1. Anambra was the first state to commence Sub-Sovereign Wealth savings, the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa during his tenure.

2. At a time when many other governors were leaving huge debts, Peter Obi left the equivalent of $500 million dollars in investment as well as local and foreign currency, including $156 million in dollar-denominated bonds.

3. For the first time in the history of Anambra State, Ambassadors and High Commissioners of notable countries such as the United States, Britain, Russia, the European Union, South Africa, Belgium, Israel, the Netherlands, and Canada, among others, visited the State.

4. Before his tenure, Anambra was practically a pariah state, blacklisted by the Diplomatic Corps and international development partners, but he change that.

5. Development partners such as UNDP, UNICEF, the World Bank, DFID, the European Union, etc., which hitherto were not in Anambra State, started working with the state.

6. Anambra was consistently adjudged one of the best states in development partnership and commitment to reforms for good governance.

23. A number of other companies followed the SABMiller initiative and were all supported and encouraged by our government; a good example is the INNOSON Motor Manufacturing Company, from which our government bought more than 1,000 vehicles.

Anambra State, for the first time, started close collaboration with recognized government security agencies (the Police, Army, Navy, Department of State Security, and Civil Defence, among others), offering them various types of support, including the provision of more than 500 security vehicles.
The improvement in security was phenomenal, such that the former IG of Police (Abubakar Mohammed) lauded Anambra State for not witnessing any bank robbery in his last three years in office.

25. To further enhance security, Anambra State provided at least one security vehicle to each of all the 177 communities in the state, as well as various organizations such as markets and churches.
