10 Weird Things That Have Happened So Far In 2023

The year 2023 has started off with a bang, with an abundance of major news stories in the first few weeks.

From the significant to the absurd, it's quite noteworthy how many extremes have been witnessed.

Despite only being a few months into the new year, 2023 is already demonstrating that it won't be lacking in excitement or surprises.

Man Accidentally Shoots Himself

On January 16th, Leandro Mathias de Novaes, a Brazilian lawyer, accompanied his mother to Laboratoria Cura in Sao Paolo for an MRI scan.

According to the New York Post's report, they were instructed to remove all metal objects and sign a protocol form before entering the MRI room.

However, Novaes chose not to disclose or remove his concealed weapon.

Tragically, the magnetic field of the MRI pulled the gun from his waistband, causing it to fire and hit him in the stomach.

Novaes was hospitalized for three weeks following the incident but succumbed to his injuries on February 6th.

Naked Attacker

According to a report by KCCI-TV, 21-year-old Trevyn Wayne Hill from Las Vegas caused quite a stir at the Des Moines Downtown Marriott on January 28th.

Hill approached another guest in a stairwell completely naked and carrying a toilet plunger, while shouting obscenities and chasing after them.

He then proceeded to roam around the hotel naked, damaging a sprinkler system and triggering multiple fire alarms before being restrained by firefighters.

Hill has denied charges of assault, disorderly conduct, and first-degree criminal mischief.

Piggy's Revenge

CNN reported that a 61-year-old butcher employed at the Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse in Hong Kong passed away on January 20th in a tragic incident involving a pig he was trying to slaughter.

The animal, which had regained consciousness after being stunned, knocked the man to the ground and caused him to sustain an injury from a meat cleaver.

Although the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, it is unusual that the man's injuries were limited to his hand and foot, according to the police.

The Labour Department expressed its condolences to the deceased's family.

Police Officer Caught Stealing Colleague's Lunch

In January, the Wyandotte Police Department in Michigan launched an inquiry after an officer was suspected of stealing a colleague's lunch while he was absent from the break room.

According to a report by "Today" show, Officer Barwig had left to help with a task in the jail when K-9 Officer Ice was spotted licking his chops and Barwig's sandwich was missing upon his return.

The department humorously announced on its Facebook page that Officer Ice had declined to cooperate with the investigation, invoking his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent.

Subsequently, numerous lawyers offered to represent the dog in court, but the department ultimately chose not to pursue disciplinary or criminal action.

Man Goes To The Extreme To Modify His Body

Marcelo "B-boy" De Souza Ribeiro, hailing from Sao Paolo, Brazil, has gained the reputation of being the most extensively modified man globally, adorned with 1,500 tattoos covering his body.

Recently, he underwent a new transformation: a "devil hand," as per The Daily Star.

Ribeiro reportedly researched extensively before the procedure, which involved splitting his hand between the middle and ring fingers, providing better flexibility and folding of the hand.

With his modifications, which also include a split tongue, he has spent approximately $35,000 over the years. Ribeiro views his body as an "art exhibition."

Batman Terrorizes Residents

On Feb. 6, Altoona, Pennsylvania, witnessed a series of terrifying incidents involving Robert Powers, aged 37, according to WTAJ-TV.

Reportedly, Powers broke into four different houses, and while covering a woman's mouth, claimed to be Batman.

In the next house, he allegedly choked a man, searched his pockets, and held him hostage with a pocket knife.

Powers then forced the man into his truck, turned on the gas stove, and drove at speeds over 100 mph, eventually crashing into a Jeep.

Later, he broke into another home, repeatedly questioning, "Why'd you do this, mom?" before being subdued by the police at the last crime scene.

Powers admitted to possibly ingesting meth or bath salts.

Burgar Leaves a Clue Which Police Uses To Trace Him

According to Fox35-TV, Lantz Kurtz, a 20-year-old man, allegedly broke into a gas station in Palm Coast, Florida, on Feb. 5 and stole multiple items.

Unknowingly, he left behind a major piece of evidence: his debit card.

The authorities found the card and used it to track down Kurtz, who claimed that he intended to return to the store and pay for the items.

However, Sheriff Rick Staly was not convinced and stated that leaving a debit card behind did not excuse Kurtz from committing burglary and theft.

Starbucks Takes Customers' Money

According to KOKI-TV, on Jan. 7, Jesse and Deedee O'Dell from Tulsa, Oklahoma, paid significantly more than their usual $10 for Starbucks coffee.

However, when Deedee attempted to use the same card at a mall a few days later, it was declined.

The couple later discovered that Starbucks had added a $4,444.44 tip to their $10.90 bill.

After contacting the district manager, they were sent two checks to reimburse them for the unexpected tip, but both checks bounced.

The couple had to cancel their family vacation, which was nonrefundable, while they waited for new checks.

Starbucks acknowledged the error and stated that new checks were being issued due to "possible human error."

Author Fakes Death to Boost Sales

Susan Meachen, a writer previously thought to have committed suicide in September 2020, has come forward to reveal that she is still alive and faked her death to boost book sales.

After her alleged suicide, an anti-bullying anthology was published in her name following a statement purportedly written by a family member claiming that she had been bullied to death by her online community of writers and book industry professionals.

Zoo Head Kills Animals To Feed Staff

According to MSN, Jose Ruben Nava, the former director of Chilpancingo Zoo in Mexico, is facing criticism for killing four pygmy goats to serve at the zoo's year-end dinner.

Fernando Ruiz Gutierrez, the director of wildlife for the state's environment department, stated that the consumption of goat meat "put the health of the people who ate them at risk because these animals were not fit for human consumption."

Nava is also accused of trading a zebra for tools. Following the death of a deer at the zoo, he was removed from his position in January.
