Road-trip to Chikmagalur: Experiences

Introduction

We left Bengaluru when it was unlocked and went to Chikmagalur. Weekend getaway from Bangalore. We spent four days at Chikmagalur lounging under the shade of the Western Ghats, which sparkled in the mild monsoon rains. With a wealth of cultural experiences, the historic temples of Belur and Halebidu, scrumptious Benne Dosa drenched in butter, delicious filter coffee, and rolling hills covered in an evergreen forestland, Chikmagalur is a worthwhile weekend getaway from Bengaluru. Days steadily transition from nights as we clock the Earth’s vertebrate’s rotation. Worldwide, Homo Sapiens eagerly await return to normalcy. The vast fields are taken back by nature. Storm clouds howl. The poles are illuminated by a white night, but there is no “chaser” posing and celebrating.

Our frantic and desperate attempt to escape the ordinary and get closer to nature was to travel to Chikmagalur. As near as we could get.

In India, the second wave was tense. We were gradually emerging from the shell after a few months of deep sleep. Bangalore was open. Weekdays come first, followed by weekends. Are the nighttime curfews still in effect? Are the bars and pubs already open? Are drinks being served? Is tourism permitted in Coorg? There were a lot of eager questions. The red state buses ultimately made their way to Bangalore, the city that is proud of India’s ability in information technology, from the state’s hinterlands.

We were apprehensive about leaving Karnataka. What if we become trapped in Goa? What happens if Delhi experiences the same unnerving silence once more? What if we visit a hospital without a cylinder of oxygen? The what-ifs create a terrifying area that will always impede travel. These are much more urgent given the current situation.

Come with me to Chikmagalur!

We went with Chikmagalur. Not because Chikmagalur was our favourite place. But the other choices were more cumbersome. The popular weekend getaways from Bangalore, Coorg, Goa, and Pondicherry, were removed from the list due to accessibility concerns.

We didn’t have any expectations at all for Chikmagalur. We were aware that the remote hill town in the Western Ghats is renowned for its verdant coffee trails. Nonetheless, that is essentially the common tale of the entire Western Ghats. What’s next? We looked online and discovered a few trails and monsoon treks, but again, we couldn’t go because we had a little child with us. What’s next? We had no other choices, yet there was no answer. At least Chikmagalur allows us to escape the hustle and bustle of depressing Bangalore. To ourselves, we said. “This will at least be a holiday!” We pondered.

preparing to travel by car from Bangalore to Chikmagalur

We left Bengaluru in the small hours of a wet morning. You will need to drive 243 kilometres in around 5 hours to get reach Chikmagalur. You encounter a few toll gates and rest areas along the way that serve Bengaluru’s renowned Empire restaurants or Mangalore’s unique fish meals.

The sky was cloudy. The roads were incredibly lengthy and deserted. On the swaying palms lining country lanes, the birds chirped. As soon as we left the city limits, I was elated.

At Sawari Rentals, we had leased a vehicle. Sai, the driver, was a native of Hassan, a Tier 2 city situated halfway between Bengaluru and Chikmagalur. He drove the automobile on NH 75 like a trained stallion despite the fact that he was blind in the centre of Bengaluru.

Innova was rented by us. For a child who often stays safe in a car seat, the middle seat was ideal. It charged us 14,000 INR for 4 days. It covered the driver’s lodging, meals, and a 900 kilometre roundtrip journey. Sai was a lovely man who hardly ever spoke and, unexpectedly, never drove with music playing. He was more anxious to take a picture at the summit of Mullayanagiri than the rest of the party!

Well

On the way to Chikmagalur, the Western Ghats had prepared a Surprise for us!

Although we were going on vacation to the Western Ghats’ foothills, we said we were going to Chikmagalur. The Western Ghats are a minefield of experiences for a careful observer since they are an iconic and ancient ecological reserve, a UNESCO heritage site that towers along the west of the Indian peninsula, and a significant component in determining climate factors for the rest of the country! The snow-capped Himalayas (think Tawang, Sikkim, Ladakh, Kargil, and similar places) steal the show on social media, but the monsoon in the Western Ghats gives the area a mystical vibe. In Chikmagalur, we had reserved a hotel room.

The growth in the coffee trade brought riches to the little village of Chikmagalur.

Chikamagalur, one of the top hill towns in Karnataka, is also one of the most well-known tourist destinations close to Bangalore. It is located at the foothills of the Mulliyangiri range. The Yagachi River originates from the nearby hills, and Chickmagalur is where the powerful Western Ghats begin.

Chikmagalur is renowned for its tranquil surroundings, verdant woods, stunning waterfalls, and high mountains. Winds with pleasant gusts, sparse precipitation, and frigid winters are only extras. Ayyanakere Lake, Baba Budangiri, Hirekolale Lake, Mulliyangiri, Manikyadhara Falls, Horanadu, and Kemmanagundi are a few of the well-known tourist destinations.
