According to foreign media reports, Honda will launch two purely electric models in 2020 and 2022, one after the other. There is no doubt that Honda has fallen behind many carmakers in the electric vehicle sector. The company has yet to launch many electric models but is gradually revising its course. In addition to the small Honda E model, which will be launched in Europe next year, the company is also developing another electric model, which is expected to be available in 2022, which will come into the market of Honda Mobil Indonesia and even more versions in a different country. Other related moves by the company include withdrawing from the diesel model market, holding off on the development of hydrogen-powered models, and accepting the emissions standards of the US state of California.

Honda held its ‘Electric Vision’ event in Amsterdam at the end of October. At the event, the company said they were electrifying their entire product line, most of which would be equipped with hybrid systems. But Tom Gardner, the company’s senior vice president for Europe, also said, “We will continue to bring purely electric products to the market.”

The all-electric Honda E, with its retro look, will arrive in Europe in the summer of 2020. But the $33,000, 35.5 kWh battery pack with a range of 125 miles (about 200 km) will not be sold in the US.

Given that consumer demand for electric vehicles is growing in Europe, Honda will focus on developing its EV business there first, and Gardner told the press that with the UK’s market share of electric vehicles rising from 2 percent in 2015 to the current 7 or 8 percent, “this market is starting to become more and more important.”

The strength of emissions regulation in Europe is also one of the main factors driving Honda’s determination to develop electric vehicles. according to Gardner, “The regulatory policies, market conditions and consumer behavior in Europe are changing rapidly, which means electrification is advancing here faster than anywhere else in the world.”

In addition to the Honda E, the company will also launch a second electric vehicle, which is expected to be unveiled in 2022. Currently, no further product-related information has been revealed.

Two electric car releases in two years is not a fast pace, to say the least. But with these measures, Honda is sending a clear message that, like hybrids, pure electric vehicles will be one of the mainstream paths of the future.

Honda is also exploring charging solutions. At an event in Amsterdam, the company announced a partnership with Vattenfall, Europe’s leading energy supplier, to create a “flexible energy contract” tailored to electric vehicle customers. Under the agreement, Vattenfall will install Honda’s 7.4 kW home charging pads for EV owners and allow them to use them to manage to charge times and usage.

The service will be available in the UK and Germany from 2020 and will be extended to other countries. The service will also pave the way for a vehicle-pile charging (V2G) solution.
