BEGINNER ART TIPS FOR PAINTING – ABSTRACTS COLOR PALETTES

A little story…

I absolutely don’t love red. It’s OK now and then, but I’m much more of a blue person.

But, red is, without a doubt, one of the favorite colors for many people.

One day I guess I was tired of the same old, same old so in a fit of wanting some color in my life, I created the painting (and tutorial) above called HEARTBEAT with reds, orange/yellow/gold and white). I really liked it when I finished and I was planning to hang it up myself, but…this painting sold quickly!

I tell you this little story because, while you may not be drawn to a particular tutorial or painting because of the colors used, you can create the same/similar type of artwork using whatever colors YOU like.

This painting could be easily done with these combos:

-Blue, green/aqua, silver, white
-Brown, cream/beige, gold, white
-Black, white/grey, silver
-Pumpkin orange, rust/brown, warm white/bronze
-Yellow, coral/orange, fuschia, gold, white

These are just a few options…you do you. It’s more important to understand the technique and the HOW. Before you start painting, just choose your palette (keep it limited).

WHAT COLORS SHOULD I CHOOSE?

You can find a lot of complementary color palettes online. Just choose the one that you like and then you know the colors will work together! You don’t have to use all of the colors, either. Choose 3-4 (not including black or white) and then stick to those.

This beginner-level tutorial is one that is easy and fun because it allows for some very expressive texturing and layering of colors in a “free form” fashion!
