“I Accepted I Was Going To Probably Die”—Heroic Pizza Delivery Guy Saves Five From Burning House

An incredible story out of Indiana has turned one 25-year-old pizza delivery driver into a national hero after he stopped on his route to rescue four children and one 18-year-old from a burning House.

Young Nicholas Bostic just happened to drive by the house and noticed visible signs of a fire, but didn't have a phone on him to call 911, so he ran into the building himself to look for anyone who might be inside.

By doing so, he likely saved the lives of all five people inside, as it was the middle of the night and they were asleep when the fire began raging. By running inside and yelling, he woke up the eldest sibling, only 18, and they were able to grab two of the younger teens as well as a one-year-old infant and make it out. However, the older teen reported that there was still a six-year-old somewhere inside.

"I asked them if anybody was left in there ― and that’s when they told me that the 6-year-old was," Bostic told the local news.

By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, at least from the perspective of one body camera, the house was already engulfed in flames. The video shows the emergency responders assessing the situation when a child's cry can be heard from the house, followed soon by the sight of Bostic running away from the flames with a screaming little kid in his arms.

The footage shows firefighters having to guide an exhausted Bostic further away from the house before having him lay on the grass to treat his wounds. Workers apply a tourniquet and the video obscures his right arm, suggesting that he had suffered substantial burns and/or cuts during his rescue mission, during which he had to punch a window out to escape. As his face contorts in pain, he can be heard asking after the infant who was carried out earlier.

"Is the baby okay?" he asks. "Please tell me that baby's okay."

Rescue workers seem to answer in the affirmative, and reports have confirmed that all family members rescued from the house escaped without serious injuries. Even the family dog, Buffy, was later retrieved by firefighters without much harm.

Bostic later recalled searching room by room for the six-year-old until he heard a cry, wrapped his shirt around his mouth, and braved thick smoke in order to retrieve the child. He then ran back upstairs to escape the smoke and punched through a window to jump down with the kid.

Bostic reported that he felt a calm sense of purpose after he decided to run in and help, even the second time when his chances of getting out safely were much lower.

"I don’t know how to explain it, but it was like I accepted I was going to probably die, right there, that night," he said. "But it was a weird calm. You just got to work as fast as you can."

The parents responsible for the household were gone on a date night when the fire occurred and were horrified to come home to burning wreckage and fire trucks, but were then infinitely grateful to Bostic when they learned what had happened.

"I literally told him he’s now part of our family," said Dave. "And he was all on board with it. Once we get settled someplace, we’re going to invite him over and his girlfriend for dinner."

The family is now raising money on Facebook for Bostic's medical expenses. The city of Lafayette is also helping out by honoring him and using the ticket sales for the local basketball team to raise funds for his recovery.

"Nicholas Bostic's heroic actions saved lives. His selflessness during this incident is inspiring, and he has impressed many with his courage, tenacity and steadfast calmness in the face of such perilous danger," said the LPD in a public statement. "The Lafayette Police Department and the Honorable Mayor Tony Roswarski are eternally grateful for Nicholas' intervention and would like to publicly recognize him for his actions."
