Stella Okotete is a Nigerian lawyer and an active POLITICIAN OF THE APC, a Philanthropist and humanitarian. She was formerly the Executive Director, Business Development of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) as appointed by His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on April 20, 2017.

Stella Erhuvwuoghene Okotete was born April 20, 1984, in Delta State, Nigeria. She is 39 years old. She hails from Ekrerhavwen-Agbarho community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. She attended Federal Government Girls College in Benin City, graduated in 2000.

She proceeded to obtain a diploma in law from Rivers State College of Arts and Science in Rumuola, Port Harcourt in 2002.

Stella also received a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Diplomacy from Benson Idahosa University in Benin City in 2006.

She also holds a master’s degree in peace studies and conflict resolution from the National Open University of Nigeria and a certificate for emerging leaders from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Boston, USA in 2012.

She holds certificates from the University of Virginia in the United States and the INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, both in risk management for banking programs.

Stella is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Okotete, who are natives of Ekrerhavwen-Agbarho community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. Her parents are devout Christians and members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God(RCCG). Her father, Mr Okotete is a retired civil servant while her mother is a trader and caterer who are both supportive of Stella’s education and career aspirations.

Stella is the second child and the first daughter of her parents, she has four other siblings. An older brother who is a medical doctor, a younger brother who is am engineer and two younger sisters who are both entrepreneurs and married with kids.

Stella Okotete began her career as a legal practitioner and a human rights activist. She was involved in several cases of human rights violators, especially against women and children.

Hon. Stella is the Co-Founder E ’Girls Right Foundation and an alumnus of Harvard Kennedy School Certificate program for Emerging Leaders, and the Lagos Business School (Pan-Atlantic University) Enterprise Development Centre program in Entrepreneurial Management.

She is an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria, the Institute of Management Consultants and the Institute of Corporate Administration a recipient of the Africa Humanitarian Initiative Awards.

She possesses a Certificate in New Models of Business in Society from the University of Virginia, U.S.A and a Certificate of Risk Management in Banking Programme from INSEAD, Fontainebleau France.

Stella had a brief stint in politics, having served as an elected Councilor in Ughelli-North Local Government Area, a position that helped sharpen her understanding of the socio-economic needs of neglected communities.

She was able to deploy this knowledge to ensure that neglected communities in the Local Government Area were positively impacted by the state’s Millennium Development Goals’ strategic intervention programs.

She is keenly involved in volunteer work and has worked with Internally Displaced Persons at IDP Camps in Ughelli, Maiduguri and Abuja.

She was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the executive director of business development at NEXIM Bank in 2017. She was in charge of developing and implementing strategies for promoting and facilitating non-oil exports from Nigeria. She also supervised the regional offices of the bank and coordinated the trade information system. She played a key role in facilitating export of agricultural products, solid minerals, services, and creative industries from Nigeria to other countries.

She has been nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as one of his ministerial candidates for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Stella Okotete is married to a businessman and a philanthropist who’s life is private. They have been married for over 10 years and are blessed with three children. They are both devout Christian and members of the RCCG.

Stella Controversies

Stella’s nomination as a ministerial candidate by President Bola Tinubu have been met with opposition from some quarters , who accused her of forging her academic credentials and violating the code of conduct for public officers.

However, some her critics alleged that she did not attend or complete some of the programs and that she presented fake certificates to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

These allegations have been made by some civil society groups, opposition parties and individuals who have petitioned the Senate to disqualify Stella Okotete from being confirmed as a minister. She is also being prosecuted for perjury, forgery, and breach of trust.

Stella Okotete has denied all allegations against her and maintained that she has genuine and verifiable academic qualifications. She also accused her allegators of being motivated by envy, malice and political vendetta and challenged them to provide evidence to back up their claims or face legal actions.

The Senate has yet to make a decision on Stella Okotete’s nomination, as screening and confirmation process is still ongoing. The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has assured Nigerians of thorough and fair assessment of nominees and urged Nigerians to be patient and supportive of the process.
