Nigerian Newspapers Daily Front Pages Review | Friday 11th August, 2023

NaijaChoice looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Friday 11th August, 2023.

  • The PUNCH:

The safety of ousted Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum may not be guaranteed as the Junta which overthrew his government has reportedly threatened to kill him should the Economic Community of West African States attempt any military intervention to restore democracy in the francophone country.

The junta revealed their dark plot to murder the deposed president to a top United States diplomat, two Western officials confirmed to the Associated Press on Thursday.

  • The Guardian:

Four days after expiration of the ultimatum it issued at its last extraordinary summit held on July 30, the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) Heads of State yesterday, vowed to do all, including the use of force, to dislodge the junta in Niger Republic if it remains recalcitrant.

The West African leaders arrived at the resolution at their meeting in Abuja yesterday, after reviewing happenings since Sunday when the one-week ultimatum they issued to the junta for the restoration of constitutional order lapsed.

  • ThisDay:

The naira depreciated further in the parallel market yesterday, as it traded at N950/$1 in Lagos, compared with the N930 to a dollar it went for the previous day.
However, on the Investors and Exporters’ (I&E) window, the naira closed at N781/$1 compared with its opening rate of N782/$1.

This was just as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), yesterday, said Nigeria’s loose fiscal and monetary policies were creating excess liquidity, making it difficult for the naira to stabilise against the dollar two months after authorities allowed the currency to trade freely.
In the same vein, analysts attributed the depreciation of the naira to excess cash in the system, which some specifically accused the state governors of using to mop up dollars, thereby putting pressure on the foreign exchange (FX) market.

  • The Nation:

The student of Deeper Life High School who made the highest score of 360 in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Kamsiyochukwu Nkechinyere Umeh, has cleared all her papers in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with eight A1 and one B2.

  • Daily Trust:

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday decried the federal government’s decision to dissolve the governing councils in universities across the country.

The union called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rescind what they described as an obnoxious decision to dissolve the councils without completing their tenures of office.

The National Vice Chairman of ASUU, Comrade Christopher Piwuna, of the University of Jos, spoke while presenting a paper at an event organised in honour of retiring lecturers at the Joseph Sarwuaan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM), formerly called the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), in Benue State.
