Israel Secures Gaza Border, Plants Mines

Mumbai: Israel on Tuesday re-established control over the Gaza border and planted mines where Hamas militants had toppled the barrier. Over 900 people have been killed and dozens taken captive in the Hamas attack on Israel.

After Hamas promised to kill an Israeli hostage each time Israel targeted a Palestinian home without prior notice, Israel launched its most recent wave of airstrikes.

Along with imposing a blockade on the Gaza Strip and calling up an unprecedented 300,000 reserve soldiers, the Israeli military also caused concerns that it was planning a ground invasion in response to the most daring and deadliest Hamas raid in decades.

More than 1,500 people have died as a result of the bloodshed, which has led to worldwide professions of support for Israel, public demonstrations in favor of the Palestinians, and cries for a halt to the conflict and the protection of civilians.

Israeli TV stations reported that 900 Israelis had died as a result of the Hamas onslaught, along with at least 2,600 injuries and hundreds of hostages. 260 Israelis, most of whom were young, were killed during a music event in the desert, where some of the captives had been taken.

Israeli security personnel reportedly called and left voice messages on Palestinians’ cell phones asking people to avoid certain locations, mostly in the northern and eastern parts of Gaza, since the army would be operating there.

In Gaza City’s Remal area, dozens of residents left their houses.

“We took ourselves, children and grandchildren and daughters-in-law and we ran away. I can say that we became refugees. We don’t have safety or security. What’s this life? This is not a life,” resident Salah Hanouneh, 73, said.

Israel’s top military spokesman reported that forces had regained control of overrun areas in the south of the country where the Hamas offensive took place, but scattered battles persisted as some militants continued to be active.

It was further rumored that Israel would be considering a ground invasion of Gaza, a region it abandoned over 20 years ago when it was revealed that 300,000 reservists had been activated in only two days.
