What is a lash lift?

Lash lift/perm is like using an extremely good eyelash curler, except that it’s permanent. This makes your natural lashes look much more visible and longer. And the best part – they look that way no matter if you’re swimming underwater or just woke up. 

Lash lift vs. lash extensions

A while ago it was very popular with lash extension, where they glue fake lashes to your eyelids. The big downside with lash extension is that you always have to show extreme caution towards your fake lashes, like not rubbing your eyes, not swimming underwater, not showering your face, etc. It’s also easy to get bacterial infections, and no matter if you like it or not – the extensions are going to fall off at different times and make you look like you’ve been partying for 40 days straight, and the worst; it’s going to ruin your natural lashes completely.

A lash lift is definitely a better option. It’s natural, you can rub your eyes as much as you want, and it won’t look weird after a while. Also, if you’d like your lashes to be thicker and longer, there are some hair serums out there that work without a doubt, a friend recommended me this best-selling Essys natural eyelash serum and I’ve been using it for years. It’s super effective, more gentle/safe than most serums, and totally affordable. Just use it once or twice a day, and you’ll for sure see results after a month or two. Remember to patch test.

What is brow lamination?

So, over to the Brow Lamination. The new IT treatment. During a brow lamination, we use the same products as in the lash lift, and basically, we make the eyebrows permanent bushy in whatever direction you’d like. You can also make them groomed if that’s preferable. This hair growth serum can also be used if you’d like fuller brows.

Both lash lift and brow lamination are permanent for the existing hair strands you use the treatment on, however, when you lose a hair, the new hair is obviously going to grow out in its natural way, not curly/bushy. That’s why you have to do this treatment from time to time. (So, by doing it at home you won’t only save around $100 for brow lamination and around $100 for lash lift once, you save it every month or so.) 

You probably have to do the lash lift every 6-8 weeks, depending on how fast you lose your lashes. Eyebrows, on the other hand, have to be done 1-2 times a month, because they grow so fast. Luckily brow lamination is a pretty easy and quick process to do.

The best professional lash lift kits / brow lamination kits

It was a long process searching through the JUNGLE of lash/brow kits, we focused on highly rated products, and products used in salons. The treatment is chemical, so it’s very important to choose carefully – you don’t want to put dangerous chemical stuff on your face. We did end up trying quite a few treatments in different price ranges before finding a favorite. There were a lot of issues like not having strong enough glue, didn’t like the pads, too little product, and similar.

And, just to mention it again: We only need a lash lift kit, as it can be used for both a lash lift and a brow lamination.

We found two lash lift kits from Amazon that we LOVED:

Our favorite ended up being this bestselling kit from Silksence, it’s cheap, has good and detailed instructions, it’s easy to use and it’s going to last you for a longer amount of time than the others we tried. Downside: The glue slightly loses its effect sometime after being opened. However we struggled with the glue in every kit, even the expensive ones, but the glue in this kit and the kit below were, without doubt, the best/strongest. No matter what kit you have, you can buy Dolly’s lash and brow glue if you feel like you need to after some treatments. It’s great! The kit consists of a cleanser, glue, nutrition treatment, the chemical stuff (perm and fixation), five different sized reusable pads to fit any lash length, and one tool. Since it’s only one tool included (that’s only suited for eyelash lifting) you need to buy a disposable mascara brush like this, or similar, if you want to use this kit for brow lamination as well, but it’s very cheap so no worries.

Another very close competitor is this kit from MIYA. It contains many more tools which are great because the only (slightly) difficult part is to glue and attach the lashes to the pad, but Miya makes it easier. This kit has all the same stuff as the kit from Silksence, the only difference is that it has a bunch of tools for both lash lift and brow lamination. It’s also a little gentler to the skin, which is great. In many ways, we liked this one best, the only downside, and the reason it doesn’t “win”, is because the treatments are packet in sachets, and in one way this is great because it’s hygienic and the product remains fresh and won’t expire as fast, but it also means that you won’t be able to get as many treatments as in the Silksence kit. But on the other hand, it’s a very affordable kit so it’s not a very big deal.

If you just want a lash lift, the kit from silksence is probably the best choice. If you want both lash lift and brow lamination, the kit from MIYA is the best choice since it has the most tools and is gentler. When doing a lash lift, the product doesn’t actually touch the skin like it does when doing a brow lamination, that’s why it’s ideal to use a gentler treatment like MIYA which is made for both purposes. But, again, you can choose both!  

In addition to a good kit, you also need a saline solution and plastic film.

And, remember to do a patch test.

How to do brow lamination at home step by step

DIY Brow lamination

Make sure not to do the brow lamination on red and irritated skin, so don’t pluck your brows or similar right before the treatment, since this makes the skin sore. 

1. Cleanse brows with the containing cleanser or an oil-free cleanser

2. Cleanse with saline solution, or else the glue won’t stick and treatment might not be absorbed.  

3. Use some kind of tool, like a clean mascara brush and apply some glue to the brush, and wait a minute for the glue to slightly harden/become stickier, then brush your brows in the way you’d like them to be. Repeat this step if you feel it’s necessary. Wait until it’s dry before the next step.

4. Apply:

• Silksence kit: Apply perm solution (#1), leave on for 8-12 minutes
• MIYA kit: Apply lifting lotion (1), leave on for 5-7 minutes 

5. Use a plastic film to keep the brows in place during the treatment.

6. Apply:

• Silksence kit: Apply fixation solution (#2), leave on for 8-12 minutes 
• MIYA kit: Apply setting lotion (2), leave on for 5-7 minutes. 

Put the plastic film back on.

7. Gently remove the products with a saline solution. Apply the nutrition product (#3), leave on for a couple of minutes then gently remove all products with lukewarm water and cleanser. 

For the rest of the day, don’t wash your brows, apply make-up and similar, leave them alone to let them “set”. 

8 – Optional – COLOR. If you’d like to color your eyebrows, it’s ideal to do that the day before the lamination, or the day after. If you need a new color, I strongly recommend the colors from refectocil. This is usually the color used by saloons, and they are a good fit for both lashes and brows. Their colors are wonderful! They’re easy to use, gentle, and long-lasting.

How to color your eyebrows at home like a professional

All you need is an oxidant and color/colors. You can choose between this liquid oxidant or this cream oxidant, it doesn’t really matter which you choose, but the cream is a little easier to work with. The oxidant is mixed with one or several colors, this twin pack with light brown and natural brown is the most common choice and suitable for most people. They come with instructions, so don’t worry. If you want to color your lashes as well, make sure to add this black color to your purchase. The oxidant and colors are totally affordable and are going to last for years. To save some money, you can also buy this color kit containing oxidant + basic eyebrow color and mixing equipment, and perhaps purchase some other color shades on the side if you need to. Remember to patch test!

How to do a LASH LIFT at home step by step

 If you are doing the lash lift by yourself, do one eye at a time! 

1. Cleanse lashes and eye area with the containing cleanser or an oil-free cleanser you have at home

2. Cleanse with saline solution, or else the glue won’t stick and the treatment might not be absorbed.  

3. Find a matching pad. The different pad sizes are made for different eyelash lengths, not different eye shapes. They should fit all eyes, but if the pads somehow are a bad fit for you, you can customize them by cutting them. 

4. Apply glue to the backside of the pad. Be generous. Wait for a minute for the glue to become stickier. Then place the lift pad on your eyelid, as close to the lash line as you can get. 5. Apply glue to the front side of the pad, and to your lashes. Wait a minute for the glue to become stickier. Then use the tools to glue/attach the lashes to the pad. Let it dry.

6. Apply: 

• Silksence: Apply perm solution (#1), leave on for 8-12 minutes
• MIYA: Apply lifting lotion (1), leave on for 5-7 minutes

7. Then apply:

• Silksence kit: Apply fixation solution (#2), leave on for 8-12 minutes 
• MIYA kit: Apply setting lotion (2), leave on for 5-7 minutes. 

8. Gently remove the products with a saline solution. Apply the nutrition product (#3), leave on for a couple of minutes then gently remove all products with lukewarm water and cleanser. 

9. Optional – COLOR: Unless you are blessed with beautiful black eyelashes, you should consider dying them dark. This makes them look so much better, and it’s a great idea to dye them while they’re still glued to the pads.

How to color your lashes at home:

Carefully wipe off the products used in the above steps with lukewarm water, then apply the coloring products you use. If you’re in need of a new lash and brow dye, refectocil is a great choice. This is usually the brand used by saloons. The color is easy to use, gentle, and long-lasting. All you need is an oxidant and a color. You can choose between this liquid oxidant or this cream oxidant, it doesn’t really matter which you choose, but the cream is a little easier to work with. The oxidant is mixed with a color, this black one for lashes to be precise. If you are coloring your brows as well, make sure to also purchase a color of your desired shade. The products will last for years. Remember to patch test as always.

10. For the rest of the day, don’t wash your lashes, apply make-up or something similar, leave the lashes alone to let them “set”.
