CGI Censorship in ‘Oppenheimer’: Florence Pugh Had a Black Dress Covering in International Screenings

Christopher Nolan‘s ‘Oppenheimer‘ is now playing in theaters. The film had reportedly two nudity scenes featuring Cillian Murphy‘s J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Florence Pugh‘s Jean Tatlock, which are being censored and screened in India and the Middle East countries, with a CGI black dress covering Florence Pugh.

Indian viewers noticed that in one of the nude scenes in ‘Oppenheimer,’ Florence Pugh was covered in a ‘black dress.’ Many believe this was done by the makers to avoid controversy in India. Also, some scenes were modified for the Indian audience under orders from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). See the image below.

In an interview with The Guardian, Nolan said ‘Oppenheimer’ includes prolonged full nudity Scenes Featuring Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh, the latter playing Oppenheimer’s ex-fiancée. Additionally, there are intimate moments and complex scenes involving Emily Blunt, who portrays Oppenheimer’s wife, that are emotionally intense.

Nolan said, “Oppenheimer represents a significant shift. He told Wired the love story aspect “is as strong as I’ve ever done”. It features prolonged full nudity for Murphy and Florence Pugh, who plays Oppenheimer’s ex-fiancee, as well as sex, and there are complicated scenes with Emily Blunt, who plays his wife, “that were pretty heavy”. Murphy turns coy: “I’m under strict instructions not to give away anything.”

From Christopher Nolan, ‘Oppenheimer’ tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), a brilliant theoretical physicist who was appointed as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II, and Oppenheimer’s journey as he works tirelessly to develop the atomic bomb as part of the Manhattan Project, a top-secret government initiative. He works closely with Leslie Groves (played by Matt Damon), a military leader tasked with overseeing the project, and faces opposition from scientists who question the morality of creating such a destructive weapon.

The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie as Edward Teller, Michael Angarano as Robert Serber, Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold as Frank Oppenheimer, David Krumholtz as Isidor Isaac Rabi, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Modine as Vannevar Bush, Jack Quaid, David Dastmalchian, Jason Clarke, Josh Peck as Kenneth Bainbridge, Devon Bostick as Seth Neddermeyer, Alex Wolff, Tony Goldwyn, Scott Grimes, Josh Zuckerman, and James D’Arcy.
