Universal Pictures released the first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The film is based on a documentary about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. He led the Los Alamos Laboratory, where the bombs were built, and led the Manhattan Project, a government research project that developed nuclear weapons from 1942 to 1946. Watch the trailer below.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, he wrote the script based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s biography American Prometheus. The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie as Edward Teller, Michael Angarano as Robert Serber, Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, and Dylan Arnold as Frank Oppenheimer.
In an interview with Total Film, Nolan revealed that he recreated the nuclear bomb explosion without CGI for Oppenheimer. He said, “I think recreating the Trinity test [the first nuclear weapon detonation ever] without the use of computer graphics was a huge challenge to take on.” Nolan added, “Andrew Jackson — my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on — was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there – there were huge practical challenges.”
Murphy has been in a number of Christopher Nolan’s previous films, including Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and Dunkirk. The upcoming film will be Murphy and Nolan’s sixth time working together on a project. Speaking to The Guardian, Murphy said, “I’ll always turn up for Chris, whatever the size of the part.” Murphy added, “Chris will call me up and I’m there.”
Oppenheimer will hit theaters on July 21, 2023, by Universal Pictures.
