Strawberry is a popular fruit grown across the world. The strawberry was first cultivated in Chile in the year 1700 and since then, this fruit has achieved a lot of popularity. The strawberry belongs to the family Rosaceae, genus Fragaria, and is among the most widely eaten fruits throughout the world. Strawberry is good for providing protection against cancer, heart issues as well as skin issues. Strawberry is also effective for fat loss. Strawberries are essential in maintaining blood sugar levels, eye care and proper brain function.

The Strawberries need a special climate for cultivation. The area should also have cold weather and the ideal temperature for the growth of strawberries is 60°F to 80°F. Worldwide 9,125,913 tonnes of strawberry is produced per year. China is the largest strawberry producer in the world with 3,801,865 tonnes of production volume per year. China and the United States of America produce together 57% of the World's total. There are over 600 varieties of strawberries in the world.

A lot of companies use this fruit for the production of perfumes and cosmetics.
Strawberries are widely consumed either fresh or used in the preparation of cakes, juices, bread rolls, wines, pies, milkshakes and chocolate. Strawberries are used in making preserved fruits. Strawberry flavourings and strawberries are used as a common addition to dairy products such as yoghurts, milkshakes, flavoured milk, ice cream, and smoothies. Extracts derived from the Strawberry pigment can be used to make natural acid and base indicators. Human-made strawberry flavourings are used in the manufacturing of many products such as lip gloss, candy and hand sanitizers among others. 










In Japan, there are more than 25,000 strawberry farms totalling 6360 ha. Over 95% of the acreage is in an annual hill culture system. The majority of strawberry farms are small and family-operated. The Japanese strawberry cultivars produce soft fruit as compared to U.S. or European cultivars.

Japan is said to have the highest consumption ratio of raw strawberries in the world. In Japan, more than 90% of strawberry production is forcing culture. Japanese strawberries account for more than half the existing varieties. Japanese strawberries offer such a broad variety that does not exist elsewhere in the world. There are 294 varieties of strawberries registered in Japan.







Russia produced 208,800 tonnes of strawberries. Russia accounts for 2.35% of total world Strawberry production. It is cultivated over 31,122 hectares.










Poland takes second place in Europe in terms of strawberry production. Poland accounts for 2.09% of total world Strawberry production, with the production of 185,400 tonnes. All strawberries produced in Poland are grown in an open field. It is cultivated over 49,900 hectares. The largest cultivation areas are located in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship which contributed over 1/3 of the national strawberry cultivation area. Lubelskie and Świętokrzyskie voivodships also belong to the area with intensive cultivation of these fruits.

Several dozen varieties of these fruits are grown in Poland. Surprise des Halles, Redgauntlet and Senga Sengana are three basic varieties. Senga Sengana comprises about 80 % of the total amount of strawberries grown. About 70–80% of the harvested fruit is used by the processing industry, mainly for the production of compote, juice, frozen fruit and other products. A large part of Polish strawberries production is exported. Poland exports its frozen strawberries to Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland and Great Britain. The majority of Polish strawberries enter the EU market. Poland exported fruits worth around EUR 180 mln.









South Korea accounts for 2.17% of total world Strawberry production with a production of 192,971 tonnes. Strawberry cultivated area spreads over 6,212 hectares. The major strawberry growing regions in Korea are Gyeongsangnam-do contributing 34 per cent of total production and Chungcheongnam-do with 32 per cent, followed by Jeollanam-do with 10 per cent and Jeollabuk-do with nine per cent. The cities of Jinju and Miryang in Gyeongsangnam-do, Nonsan in Chungcheongnam-do, and the county Damyang in Jeollanam-do account for up to 35 per cent of Korea’s total strawberry production.

In Korea, 97 per cent of strawberries are produced in greenhouses. The main strawberry cultivars grown in Korea are Maehyang, Akihime, Seol-hyang, Seonhong, and Flamengo. Of these, Maehyang and Flamengo are the main export cultivars. Korea exports strawberries to about 20 countries. The biggest market for Korean strawberries in Hong Kong with 30% of exports, followed by Singapore, Thailand, the U.S., New Zealand, Canada, Vietnam and Malaysia. South Korea’s strawberry exports were 52.6 million U.S. dollars.












Spain produced 351,960 tonnes of strawberries. Spain accounts for 3.96% of total world Strawberry production. It is cultivated over 7,260 hectares. Around 7,000 hectares acres of fields in Andalusia are dedicated to strawberry production. Over 90% of Spain’s production of strawberries takes place in the SW corner of the country in the Huelva region. Nearly ninety-eight per cent of the strawberries produced in Huelva come from the Camarosa variety. While The Tudla, Big Bear, Cartuno, and Carisma varieties make up the remaining two per cent. The Spanish strawberry nursery industry is mostly concentrated in Castilla-León, Central-Northern part of Spain. Strawberries are cited as “red gold” in Spain.

The Spanish strawberry industry is worth more than €400 million a year and supports around 50,000 jobs. Spain is the biggest exporter of strawberries worldwide. Germany imports about 107 thousand tonnes, accounting for one-third of the Spanish production. Followed by France, which imports 56 thousand tons. Spain exports strawberries to other European destinations that include the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, The Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. Spanish strawberry exports represented about 5484 thousand Euros in sales.










Egypt produces around 460,245 tonnes of strawberry. Egypt accounts for 5.18% of total world Strawberry production. The strawberry cultivated over 11,772 hectares. The governorates that grow strawberries are Qalyoubiyah, Sharqeya, Ismailia, Beheira, and Qaluobia as well as lands lying on the banks of the Nubariyah canal northwestern the country.

Egypt is among the top five strawberries exporters and first among the Arab countries in production and exportation. Egypt ranks first in the world as frozen strawberry exporter with a global share of 20 percent. Egypt exports approximately 140,000 tons of fresh and frozen fruits to countries in Europe, America, Southern Asia, the Gulf States, and The Middle East. Strawberry exports brought in US$86 million.
















Turkey accounts for 5.48% of total world Strawberry production, with the production of 486,705 tonnes. It is grown over 16,090 hectares. Although strawberries are grown in almost all parts of Turkey, the leading strawberry producing regions are the Mediterranean, Aegean and Marmara regions. Most of the strawberry growers are small landholders and strawberry growing in Turkey is a family business.

Turkey became one of the major strawberry producers' in the world. Turkey export strawberries to eastern European countries like the Russian Federation, followed by Serbia, Macedonia, Iraq, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine. Turkey exported 13 thousand 678 tons of strawberries and earned 12 million USD dollars. Russia is the top importer of Turkish strawberries.















Mexico accounts for 9.69% of total world Strawberry production, with production of 861,337 tonnes. Strawberries cultivated over 16,429 hectares. Mexico exported 200,000 tons of strawberry. Mexico became the top strawberry exporter in the world, generating $827.3 million from exports.










The United States of America accounts for 11.50% of total world Strawberry production, with the production of 1,021,490 tonnes. Strawberries are grown on more than 46,00 acres in the United States today. In the United States, fresh strawberries are primarily cultivated in California and Florida, followed by New York, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington. California and Florida are the top two strawberry producing states within the U.S., with California and Florida producing over 91% and 8 % of the entire strawberry crop. Florida produces the majority of the domestic winter strawberry crop. United States production was valued at more than 2 2.2 billion.














China accounts for 36.16% of total world Strawberry production, with the production of 3,212,814 tonnes. Strawberries are grown on more than 125,637 hectares. In China, the main strawberry growing areas are Hebei, Shandong, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Sichuan and Anhui, and the main planting varieties are Zhangji, Hongyan and Sweet Charlie. Shandong is the largest producer of strawberries in China, with an annual output of 548,500 tons, a fifth of China’s total.

Frozen strawberry is the main export variety of Chinese strawberry products. The Netherlands is a major exporter of frozen strawberries to China. Japan, Germany, France, the United States, South Korea, Thailand, Russia and other countries also imported frozen strawberries from China. In 2020, the export volume of strawberries reached 5,815.6 tons, with an export value of $15.31 million.
