Top 10 Nickel Producing Countries In the World

Nickel is a chemical element and a transition metal. Nickel is a bright, silvery-white metallic element. Nickel is a transition element that displays a mixture of ferrous and nonferrous metal properties. Nickel deposits develop when magma with low silica and high magnesium is saturated in sulfur after reacting with rocks in the Earth's crust. The unique properties of nickel were discovered in 1751 by Swedish chemist and mineralogist Baron Axel Fredrik Cronstedt. The silvery metal exists primarily in laterite and sulphide deposits. Nickel is the fifth most abundant element on Earth, most nickel is located within the earth’s core, around 1,800 miles below the Earth's surface. Nickel Ore is the world's one most traded product, with a total trade of $3.72B.

Total world nickel reserves were estimated to be 94 million tonnes by the U.S. Geological Survey. Currently, Australia has one of the world’s largest reserves at 19 million metric tons, representing 24 per cent of the world’s total estimated nickel reserves. Followed by Brazil and Russia, they hold reserves of 10 million and 7.6 million tonnes respectively. Nickel ore is mined in 23 countries and smelted or refined in 25 countries, globally. Global production of nickel from mines was estimated to amount to a total of 2.5 million metric tons in 2020. The major countries in nickel mining include Indonesia, the Philippines, Canada, Russia, and New Caledonia. In 2020, Indonesia was the largest producer at 760,000 metric tonnes or 30.4% of global mined production. Canada ranked sixth, with 6.7% of the global total. Malaysia, Taiwan and China account for around 62 per cent of the world's nickel exports.

It is mostly used for high-grade steel manufacturing, to withstand corrosive environments and extreme temperatures. Stainless steel is the largest end-use for nickel, accounting for two-thirds of total consumption, which is used in the construction, automotive, and consumer goods sectors. Nickel is a very versatile metal and is currently used for many different applications, such as those of industrial, military, aerospace, marine, and architectural means. The aerospace industry is a leading consumer of nickel-base superalloys. Turbine blades, discs and other critical parts of jet engines are fabricated from superalloys. It is needed for the manufacturing of electric vehicles, wind turbines, and nuclear power plants. It can also be used as part of nickel oxides and within other chemicals. As the world transitions towards electric vehicles and cleaner energy sources, nickel has emerged as an essential metal for this green revolution. Nickel is used as a component in the manufacture of nickel-cadmium batteries. It is used in the production of lithium-ion batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles.

In 2020, the United States's nickel mines produced an estimated 16,000 metric tons of nickel. The U.S. currently only has one domestic nickel mine, the Eagle mine, located in Michigan. The Eagle mine is a small, high-grade nickel-mining and copper-mining project owned by Lundin Mining. The United States has only one nickel smelter. The principal consuming State was Pennsylvania, followed by West Virginia and New Jersey.

In 2020, Cuba's nickel mines produced an estimated 51,000 metric tons of nickel. Cubaniquel is the sole operator of the Che Guevara processing plant at Moa, eastern Holguin province, and also has a joint venture with Canadian miner Sherritt International Corp at the Pedro Soto Alba plant in the same area.

In 2020, Brazil's nickel mines produced an estimated 67,000 metric tons of nickel. Goiás and Pará are the only two producers of nickel in the country. The Brazilian state of Goiás has the largest mine production of nickel. Production in the state reached 42.3 thousand metric tons of metal, representing nearly two thirds per cent of the country's nickel production that year. Meanwhile, nickel mine production in the state of Pará amounted to almost 23 thousand tons.

In 2020, the production volume of nickel in China amounted to about 110,000 metric tons. There are more than 40 nickel-iron (RKEF, electric furnace, blast furnace) enterprises in production in China. China’s primary nickel consumption reached 1.04 million tons,

In 2020, Canada produced 187,000 tonnes of nickel. Mines are located in Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Manitoba. The Sudbury Area Mine is located in Ontario, produced an estimated 17.67 Thousand tonnes of nickel. The Raglan Mines is located in Quebec produced an estimated 39.23 Thousand tonnes of nickel. The Voisey’s Bay Mine produced an estimated 35.7 Thousand tonnes of nickel. The Nunavik Nickel Project is produced an estimated 11.156 Thousand tonnes of nickel. The Coleman Mine is located in Ontario, produced an estimated 14.136 Thousand tonnes of nickel.

Canada also produced 124,043 tonnes of refined nickel at three refineries located in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta; Sudbury, Ontario; and Long Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador. Canada's exports of nickel and nickel-based products in 2020 were valued at $3.9 billion. Canada exported 107,128 tonnes of unwrought nickel valued at $2.0 billion in 2020. The top five export destinations were the United States, China, the Netherlands, Belgium and Japan.

In 2020, Australia produced 200,000 tonnes of nickel. Australia has the world’s largest nickel reserves with an estimated 19 million tonnes. This represents 24 per cent of the world’s total estimated nickel reserves. Some of the world's largest komatiite-hosted nickel sulphide and lateritic deposits occur in Australia, predominantly in Western Australia. Australia's nickel production is dominated by komatiite deposits (82%). The majority of Australia's nickel resources are located in laterite deposits (69%).

Western Australia is the largest holder of nickel resources with about 90% of total Australian economic resources, followed by New South Wales with 5%, Queensland with 4% and Tasmania with less than 1%. The Murrin Murrin Mine is located in Western Australia. It is produced an estimated 36.4 Thousand tonnes of nickel. The Ravensthorpe Mine is located in Western Australia. It produced an estimated 12.695 Thousand tonnes of nickel. The Nova Bollinger Project produced an estimated 30.436 Thousand tonnes of nickel. With an annual production of 200,000 tonnes in 2020, New Caledonia was one of the largest producers. Nickel mining in New Caledonia is a major sector of the New Caledonian economy. The island contains about 7.1 million tonnes of nickel reserves, about 10% of the world's total. Nickel production in New Caledonia accounts for 6% of the island's GDP and 24% of private employment.

Goro mine is one of the largest hydrometallurgical process plants constructed, it produced 60,000 tonnes of nickel per annum. The nickel is extracted from laterite, with proven reserves of 120 million tonnes. Nickel mining is now becoming the largest employer in New Caledonia. The mining industry employs more than 7500 employees. Nickel ore and derived metallurgical products represent about 90% of the total value of exports.

The annual amount of nickel mined in Russia was estimated at 270 thousand metric tons in 2021. The value of nickel and nickel products exported from Russia was the highest worldwide, at approximately three billion U.S. dollars. The largest nickel-producing company in Russia is Nornickel, also known as Norilsk Nickel. The company produced approximately 172.4 thousand metric tons of nickel in 2020.
