Gardening: An Insight To Nature And Life

What is the first thought which peeps in when we say gardening? Flowers? Leaves? Sand? Butterflies? Well, butterflies come later in the scene when we are done with nurturing the seeds and they bear beautiful flowers.

Concept of Gardening

Gardening is basically taking a piece of land and turning it into a beautiful garden and looking after it thereafter. We can do gardening on various scales:

  1. Small scale: In our houses
  2. Large scale: Nurseries and orchards

Gardening in Houses

  • Many people prefer to have greenery in and outside the house. This is, according to me, a very noble thought because nature can be healing at times. A quotation says, “When people leave your side, turn towards nature, it will never disappoint you.”
  • Millennials have gardens in the corner of the balconies, decorated with flowerpots and climbers running down the railings. Some have kitchen gardens, with bonsai and mini plant pots.
  • Many people grow plants on the terraces. There’s a fancy term for it, known as ‘terrace gardening/farming.’
  • In rural areas, garden means land with beautiful flowers growing in front of the house and sideways, mainly exterior, to give a glaze and beauty to the house.
  • Whilst in urban areas, gardening is a fancy habit or hobby. Some groups enjoy taking care of plants. Interior gardening is mostly witnessed, due to the lack of barren lands and huge buildings which make it difficult for plants to sustain in the globally warm environment.

Nurseries

Nursery is a large piece of land for growing various types of plants, flowering and non-flowering. Here, we can sell and grow plants simultaneously.

While passing through highways or some roads, we often see nurseries with rows of plants placed in pots, and sometimes hung on stands. Some nurseries use glasshouses to grow plants. Those glasshouses are called greenhouses where plants are grown with the sunlight reflected through the glass surfaces and other necessities taken care of manually.

Orchards

This is also a type of garden where fruit trees are grown and taken care of. Orchards always carry a fruity smell. They are mostly on government-owned lands and the private ones are good for finance.

Tools for Gardening

The tools, the mechanical ones, needed for gardening are chisels, water sprinklers (some people also use mugs or pipes to water the plants), shovel, trowel, gardening fork, rake etc.

We must choose an open ground or a place where sunshine shows its face quite properly.

Tips and Tricks for Gardening

When one goes out for gardening, one should make sure to cover the feet, maybe by wearing boots, because you never know which insect or worm might come out. Secondly, the habit should be consistent. We should take care of the plants regularly. Moreover, we should remove the weeds and climbers which grow amidst the plants from time to time. The most important is the water supply. One should take care to have a sufficient supply of water and Taps and pipes to water the plants. We can also use water cans.

Sunlight is very important for the growth of plants. One should make sure to plant the seeds or place the flower pots in such a location that it gets complete sunshine.

Distinguishing soil quality is very important for a gardener. Some plants grow very well in some soil while don’t in others. Be it a professional gardener or a habitual one, a person should plant only those plants in his/her garden which have the probability of growing.

Gardening as a Hobby

Aged people (probably retired) take up gardening as a hobby. It’s not generalized that only old people can do it, many youngsters enjoy spending time with plants in the backyard or balcony.

I think gardening is like a jolly as well as holy activity, which makes us go around searching for bad influences on our lovely (weeds) and removing them. Gardening enables one to beautify Nature in his/her way. Levelling the grass, removing extra and rotten leaves, picking up the fallen leaves and flowers gives one joy. Imagine yourself in your garden, with a basket which has two divisions, on one side you put the rotten leaves and on the other, you put the fallen flowers. Isn’t this the depiction of beauty amidst beast? Isn’t it comparable to life, with the good and bad times, moving side by side?

Gardening as a Passion

Many people have made it a passion and a professional from their growing hobby of gardening. There are various channels on YouTube and pages on Instagram which show us how to take care of our plants and pots in the houses and gardens. They also give us little hacks to make it a different type of garden. We can do gardening in plastic pots, cans, bowls, and even eggshells. It just needs the determination to do it.

Scientific Advantages of Gardening

If we talk about the health benefits first, they are as follows:

  • Gardening gives one good exposure to sunlight, i.e. Vitamin D.
  • It reduces the risk of having dementia, a chronic disorder.
  • Further, gardening increases the secretion of some chemicals in the brain which boosts our mood and energizes us.
  • Moreover, we do gardening in the open which enables one to intake more fresh air and oxygen, of course.
  • Lastly, gardening gives one company and removes the feeling of loneliness.

Other Benefits of Gardening

  • Firstly, gardening increases interaction. A person interested in gardening looks for people with the same interest and goes outside. It’s like an exercise.
  • Secondly, it makes one capable of taking charge of their own needs and wants and makes a person look after their health.
  • Thirdly, a person interested in gardening automatically intakes healthy food and loves beautiful surroundings.
  • Moreover, digging, hauling, harvesting and other activities involved in gardening stimulates physical strength, improves heart condition, controls weight and facilitates sound sleep and above all, strengthens the immune system.

Gardening Brings Us Closer to Nature and Life

Enjoying the open air, feeling the breeze touching our faces and making our minds jolly and relaxed brings positivity in our lives. This is done by gardening, a habit that makes one nurture nature and in return, we are nurtured as well. Adopting this as a hobby makes us bear friendship with plants, with leaves, with twigs and with nature.

Nature has always been the epitome of peace and serenity and it has always given one the direction needed. When a person connects to nature, one bears an insight about life, a deep meaning about existence.

Gardening can be such a tool that can make a depressed person see life from a new perspective. Daily going on in the sun, spectating if the plants are okay or not, definitely brings out the caring nature of a person, which further can be applied in real life, for real people.

Conclusion

We, as the most advanced creatures on earth, can always spare some time to invest in activities which will make our surroundings beautiful, and undoubtedly, gardening is one of the best choices.

Life is beautiful, and we can make it more cheerful by getting ourselves close to nature and hence close to life.
