History of Castle Stalker

Yes, the word ‘stalker’ does paint a horrible picture of someone lurking in the shadows but don’t worry, that has nothing to do with this beautiful structure. The castle’s name in Gaelic is ‘Caisteal an Stalcaire’, which means hunter or falconer. 

Initially owned by the MacDougal clan, it was named after King James IV of Scotland, who frequently visited this castle to go hunting. 

In a drunken bet, the castle was passed onto the Campbell Clan in 1620. After passing the ownership back and forth between the two clans, the Campbells finally abandoned it in the 1800s. It was then bought by Charles Stewart of Achara, who carried out conservation work on the castle. It was in 1965 that Stewart Allward acquired the castle and completely restored it.
