Ableton Live 10: One Of The Best DAWs On Market

Ableton Live 10 is the latest update to one of the most popular DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation) on the market and comes with several important improvements. The new Ableton Live features improved design and performance and includes some great new instruments. It is one of the best digital audio workstations today, perfect for musicians and producers looking for a modern and different option to the traditional Pro Tools and Cubase.

Technical features of Ableton Live 10:

  • Technical characteristics of Ableton Live 10:
  • Resolution: 32-bit / 192 kHz.
  • Entrances/exits: 256
  • Audio formats: AIFF, WAV, FLAC, REX, MP3, Ogg-Vorbis.
  • Effects: 39 audio, 16 MIDI.
  • System requirements: Win7 (64-bit), Mac OSX 10.11.

Ableton Live 10 Suite/Standard/Intro

The new Ableton Live comes in three different versions to meet the needs of any user: Intro, Standard, and Suite. The Intro version includes the essentials in terms of sounds/plug-ins and is very cheap. It is designed for those just starting out in the world of digital music products and is limited to 16 audio and Midi tracks. The Standard version of Ableton Live 10 is a better option for those looking to get more serious into music production. The track limit is higher and it comes with many more plug-ins, like the great EQ Eight. It costs a lot more than Ableton Live 10 Intro but its price is very justified.

The Ableton Live 10 Suite digital audio workstation is the most professional and complete version. It integrates over 70 GB of sounds, instrument/plug-ins additions, and a feature called Max For Live that allows you to code your own plug-ins and extensions. It is the recommended version for medium or advanced producers looking to take advantage of all the possibilities of Ableton Live.

Ableton Live 10: new design and dual workflow

The first thing that stands out about Ableton Live 10 is that it has a very attractive graphical update. The new font is beautiful, MIDI notes are the same color as your clips, and it features a great pastel color scheme. At the top of the browser is the new collections panel that integrates filter folders of different colors. Instruments, samples, plug-ins, presets, projects, etc. can be placed there for direct access.

Ableton 10 has dual views (workflows): Session and Arrange. The session view is excellent for live use. At the top of the view, it presents empty cells called clips where you can drag the sounds. In the lower part, it integrates controls for the tracks, such as potentiometers and faders for the volume.

It lets you play multiple tracks simultaneously in loop mode until you stop, play sounds, and improvise without compromising timing. It is ideal for developing ideas since you can drag loops, change them and make adjustments. In Session View, you can also add Midi clips, in addition to loops and samples. MIDI clips contain information that triggers musical notes to the synth or plug-in you add to view a Session track.

The Arrangement view represents the second workspace of Ableton Live 10 and has the layout of a more traditional interface, such as Pro Tool or Cubase. It integrates a timeline that goes from left to right and allows you to place your MIDI or audio clips to the tracks. It is designed to make arrangements as it will enable you to place them within a definite time frame and is often used to record instruments or musicians.

One of the most interesting new features of Ableton Live 10 is the function called Capture. Capture lets you create a MIDI clip of everything you’ve played recently, a brilliant idea to take advantage of the cool accidents that can happen to everyone. On the other hand, Ableton Live 10 also adds the ability to create groups within groups without a limit of numbers and allows you to edit up to eight MIDI clips together.

Instruments, Plug-ins, and Effects

The Ableton Live digital workstation comes with its own software from which you can create sounds, play melodies, and program drums. Among them, we find the Drum rack, an instrument that allows you to add drum sounds; Simpler, a sampler for manipulating audio pieces, and Impulse, a drum sampler with many modulation options, filters, and controls. These instruments are found in all versions of Ableton Live 10, but Standard and Suite include additional ones such as Analog, Collision, Tension, Wavetable, and Bass.

The most striking new instrument in Ableton Live is the Wavetable synth, but the Echo effect is the most notable from our point of view. It sounds great and is very easy to use. The Drum Buss is a multi-effects module that enhances drum kits. It combines distortion, and compression and separates the different tonalities into sections. Lastly, the new Pedal greatly improves on Live’s previous distortion instrument.

The Ableton DAW comes with up to 46 plug-ins that can be placed on both the audio and MIDI tracks. Among them, we find the most essential ones like the Compressor, EQ Three, Reverb, Delay, and some more creative ones like the Vynil Distortion, Pedal, Frequency Shifter, and Amp. It also comes with 16 MIDI effects like Arpeggiator, Chord, Pitch, Scale, and Velocity. In general, it brings everything necessary to satisfy any need. If you want to get started with Ableton Live, we recommend this specialized course. Is free.

Conclusion

There are several excellent DAW options, such as Avid Pro Tools or Cubase, but Ableton Live 10 stands out for its dual workspace and the Max For Live function that allows you to thoroughly edit the way the software works. It’s somewhat expensive, especially the Suite version, but it includes everything you need to create any type of electronic music.

The package it offers is very solid in terms of plug-ins and features. If you already have a Launchpad or Ableton Push it is necessary. Furthermore, this DAW can be used with any MIDI keyboard thanks to the Midi Learn function. It is one of the best DAWs on the market for music producers and DJs and it is the only one that presents an intuitive and ideal platform for performing live performances.
