Everyone loves a power Couple. And while there are tons of couple categories, from the sporty couple to the savvy DIY duo, not every set of partners earns the title of ‘power couple’, no matter how dynamic or cute they are together. So, what sets a power couple apart from others?

A power couple should excel in their chosen field together, whether in terms of fashion, music, or another hobby. For example, Irish partners Andy and Jenny recently made headlines for pursuing their shared passion for poker together.

After excelling on the European Poker Tour, the pair have been dubbed not just a power couple, but a ‘power path’ couple.

Second, a power couple should be extremely ambitious and lift one another up. For example, American couple Brynn and Antoine pushed one another to bring to life their idea to simplify boat covering. Beyoncé and Jay-Z might be some of the most recognizable celebrities in the world. Paired together, they’re the gold standard in power couples.

That’s because their interests and skills intersect in the music industry. Not only has this led to both of their performances evolving and improving over time, but it’s also led to more than a few power couple hits—‘Crazy in Love’, for example. 

Another reason Beyoncé and Jay-Z are regarded as one of the world’s most impressive power couples is their business acumen. With various dealings in the music industry as a producer and promoter, Jay-Z has turned his early rap career into a music empire.

Beyoncé, many would argue, has turned her early fame as part of Destiny’s Child into the most impressive resume of her generation in terms of musical acts and critical acclaim.

Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds

Moving away from music, let’s shift toward the silver screen. Those who have followed Ryan Reynolds’ career might be a bit surprised to see him claim this spot as part of a power couple with Blake Lively.

That’s due to his numerous marriages, first to musician Alanis Morrissette and then to actress Scarlett Johansson.

However, the pair have been together for over a decade and they now have a shared list of business endeavors, from Blake’s Betty Buzz to Ryan’s Cricket Mobile.

The birth of a new power couple is always exciting, smashing headlines and offering tons of fodder for gossip. But here’s the truth: not many power couples will last.

Almost exclusively, these power couples shine brightly before fading. Many might have imagined this was the case when David Beckham and Victoria tied the knot in 1999. 

He was the world’s premier professional soccer player; she was Posh Spice. While the couple obviously paired well together as two ‘it’ stars, it wasn’t readily apparent what would hold them together.

Almost 25 years later, they’ve established the Beckham brand using a marketing strategy and now have business dealings worth around $900 million.

Ciara & Russell Wilson

Meet the American Beckhams. Though not nearly as famous globally, Ciara (as a pop musician) and Russell Wilson (as a premier football star) faced a similar outlook at the start of their relationship back in the early 2010s.

Though each is well-known in their own regard, and well-respected, their professional backgrounds didn’t leave them with much in common.

Ciara, for example, just released her own EP titled ‘CiCi’, while Wilson is finding his place on the roster of the Denver Broncos.
