Octavia Spencer’s Psychological Thriller From 5 Years Ago Is Suddenly In Netflix’s Top 10

With Halloween right around the corner, it doesn’t surprise anyone that horror movies and thrillers are all the rage right now. That’s why it makes sense that movies like Reptile and Fair Play have a chokehold on Netflix’s Top 10 chart at the moment. However, what doesn’t make sense is why a psychological thriller from more than five years ago starring Octavia Spencer has made it back into the chart. That’s right, kids, Ma is back.

Ma (2019) tells the story of a lonely woman named Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer) who has struggled with social rejection all her life. Now, past the prime of her life, she is a veterinary aide living in a small town in Ohio who is isolated from the peers she had growing up. By chance, she meets a group of teens who ask her to buy alcohol for them because they are underage. Sue Ann realises she can get the social recognition she never did with her peers growing up, vicariously through their children.

After buying alcohol for the teens, they call her Ma, and her basement becomes the neighbourhood drinking spot for rowdy teens. Things go wrong when she becomes possessive and obsessive over her new friends. Now that Ma has had a little taste of the popularity she lacked growing up, she will do anything to maintain it.

Ma boasts a star-studded cast including Corey Fogelmanis as Andy, Dante Brown as Darrell, Diana Silvers as Maggie, Dominic Burgess as Stu, Gianni Paolo as Chaz, Heather Marie Pate as Ashley, Juliette Lewis as Erica, Luke Evans as Ben, Margaret Fegan as Stephanie, McKaley Miller as Haley, Octavia Spencer as Sue Ann (Ma), and Tanyell Waivers as Genie, all of whom come together to bring the thrills and the excitement of the movie to life.

Despite being released in 2019, Ma is seeing a sudden and seemingly random resurgence in popularity after being added to Netflix’s plethora of options to enjoy this Halloween. Since the charts were updated on the 9th of October, Ma made it into Netflix’s top 10 in the 6th place, earning 5.8 million hours viewed and 3.5 million views. It remains to be seen if the psychological thriller will keep itself at the top, but for now, it’s enjoying the spotlight.

It’s interesting to see how streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ are changing the game for movies. With plenty of movies and TV series being acquired and added to the prospective sites thanks to deals, they are getting a second life, a chance at being enjoyed that they never would have otherwise. Additionally, there is a trend that the movie or series is better loved the second time than the first. Streaming Platforms could change the game for movies worldwide if this keeps up.

TL;DR

  • Ma was released in 2019 with minimal success.
  • Now that Ma has been released on Netflix, it has already made its way into the Top 10 for the week of the 9th of October.
  • We will have to see if it has the prowess to stay in its position, to gain a few ranks, or if it will drop off like its initial IMDb scores.
