Kingsman Director Matthew Vaughn Announces A Reboot To One Of The Biggest Superhero Movie Franchises

On Saturday, Matthew Vaughn promoted his latest Film, Argylle, at New York Comic Con. The film stars Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ariana DeBose and Sam Rockwell. Despite not having any cast members to help promote the film due to the actors’ strike, Vaughn indulged the fans and media by reflecting on his career and dropping exciting news like announcing a reboot of Kick-Ass.

The British director is famous for his quirky spy films like Argylle and Kingsman, but his first major Hollywood blockbuster was the 2010 comic book adapted dark comedy Kick-Ass. According to Entertainment Weekly (EW), after Argylle is released in February of next year, the filmmaker will focus on a reboot of Kick-Ass.

The cult classic was Vaughn’s first foray into comic book film adaptations, and the film’s tremendous success allowed Vaughn to get back into Hollywood’s good graces after Vaughn quit the director’s chair for X-Men: The Last Stand. The success of Kick-Ass offered Vaughn the opportunity to direct X-Men: First Class.

Regarding the reboot, (EW) quotes Vaughn when he states, “Kick-Ass changed people’s perceptions of what a superhero film is. We’re doing it again. None of the other characters from the other Kick-Ass are in it, though we’d like to have them back after the reboot. I can’t talk about it, but it’s fun.”

The film was based on a comic book of the same name by writer Mark Miller and artist John Romita Jr. A young and upcoming Aaron Johnson was the lead and played the role of Dave Lizewski, an ordinary teenager who decides to become a real-life superhero.

While fans are excited for a reboot, the only point of contention might be questioning who will take up the mantle of Kick-Ass if Aaron Johnson is not returning. If Mark Miller had his way, it might even be Tessa Thompson from Thor fame. In 2018, the writer shared his desire to see the actress don the suit. Vaughn can use material from the second run of Kick-Ass comics, which was released by Image Comics in 2018. These feature a new protagonist called Patience Lee. She is a war veteran and a single mother who decides to wear the Kick-Ass costume and take up the mantle of a crime-fighter.

The last Kick-Ass film was way back in 2013, and in its wake, the comic book landscape has changed cinema. The first two films in the series were ground-breaking, quirky dark humour and stunning action mixed with tactile realism made the films stand out and influenced the action and gritty style of subsequent comic book films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and arguably even Batman vs Superman. It will be intriguing to see how Matthew Vaughn will grapple with the changes in the genre and what he will do to make this new film stand out like the others.

Hopefully, Matthew Vaughn’s success with the Kingsman franchise will give him the confidence to carve out a new identity for Kick-Ass in the current superhero landscape and help the franchise find a new and fresh legion of fans.

What is your first reaction to hearing that Kick-Ass is getting a reboot?
