A verified user on Reddit, r/DCEULEAKS, has claimed that Gunn’s casting for Jor-El is none other than his Guardians of the Galaxy II co-star and icon Kurt Russell. The Reddit account states that the concept art for Jor-El features the character as “being tall and I mean really tall. Like, above 7 feet at least. His costume is sort of a mix between armour and fabric, with the armour bits being like a baby blue and the fabric being a crystal-y white. He has a blue House of El crest on his chest which glows, kind of like an LED.” The verified Reddit account said, “And here’s the fun part, take this with a grain of salt. A lot of concept art uses random actors’ faces on characters but the art I’ve seen features Kurt Russell’s face on Jor-El.”

While the online claim for Kurt Russell’s casting as James Gunn’s Jor-El has no official verification, it would make sense if Russell was involved in Superman: Legacy, considering Gunn’s affinity for recasting actors he has previously worked with. Furthermore, Kurt Russell would make an excellent Jor-El. He has the Hollywood pedigree and charisma needed to portray the iconic character. James Gunn recognizes the value of casting a legend like Kurt Russell as Jor-El, thus making the online rumours seem credible. Russell would follow in the footsteps of other iconic actors like Marlon Brando and Russell Crowe, who have played the character. Kurt Russell is fit to join them in such an esteemed role.

Ultimately, time will tell if the rumours are true, but James Gunn has immense pressure on his shoulders. The disasters at the DCEU, which have been magnified by recent flops like The Flash and Blue Beetle, means Superman: Legacy, as the first film in the rebooted DC Universe, has to succeed, or it could tarnish Gunn’s image and crater plans for the DC Universe. To secure a successful launch of the DC Universe and for Superman: Legacy to succeed, including Kurt Russell as Jor-El would not just be a feather in James Gunn’s cap but lay the foundation of a successful DC Universe.

Do you think Kurt Russell is a good choice for Jor-El in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy?
