The Mystery of Ahsoka’s Sith Eyes: What It Means for Her Character

Disney+’s Ahsoka continues to turn the Star Wars universe on its head. Not only did the series reveal the franchise might be leaving the confines of the galaxy we know and love, but it also introduced viewers to the inner turmoil of its Jedi protagonist. Ahsoka Tano, faced with the vision of her former Master, flirted with the idea of joining the Dark Side, but how can we be so sure? Well, Ahsoka’s glowing yellow-red (Sith-like) eyes are a huge giveaway, mostly.

Eagle-eyed viewers noticed Ahsoka’s eyes changed in the middle of her duel with Anakin Skywalker, which took place in the series’ fifth episode. This battle was more of a spiritual ordeal, mind you, taking place in the World Between Worlds – the Star Wars Multiverse’s nexus.

In a particularly intense moment during their struggle, the two combatants lock lightsabers, only for the sparks to reveal Ahsoka’s changed eyes. Her eyes now were similar to Anakin’s own after he finished the purge of the Jedi Temple in Coruscant. The eyes are a well-known trait among Sith Lords, with Darth Sidious, better known as Emperor Palpatine, also sporting the same mean look.

The fact that someone like Ahsoka – who has remained as loyal as can be to the pacifist Jedi way of life – can be tempted by the Dark Side only shows how dangerous the Sith belief can be. Throughout the series, we’ve seen how the Dark Side can corrupt even the most noble souls, and Ahsoka is no exception.

However, unlike Anakin, Ahsoka appears ready to let go of her past, and that includes the influence of her former Master. By overcoming who she was and facing the future, Ahsoka manages to escape the grasp of the Dark Side. This is why her toying with the power of the Sith only happened for a brief second, unlike Anakin, who immediately began choking people the second his eyes turned yellow.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only time Ahsoka has had the infamous yellow eyes. Some fans of the Clone Wars CG animated show might remember an episode in Season 3 where the characters visited the realm of Mortis. In there, both Ahsoka and Anakin were “possessed” by the Dark Side, and they both had their eyes changed to yellow. More than anything, I think it’s fascinating that the two characters that underwent this ordeal were Anakin and Ahsoka because it shows how intertwined their paths are, and how Ahsoka is just a few wrong decisions away from turning into a Sith Lord.

While the show has received its fair share of criticism – some of them well-deserved, especially after seeing some of those “space stunts” – it’s safe to say that, with Ahsoka, the Star Wars universe finally feels like it’s “expanding.” That was the original intent of these shows: to add more content to the characters and stories we know by heart, not to turn them into The Book of Boba Fett.

With the Ahsoka season finale drawing closer, we’ll see just how much she learned from her Master and friend – and how much will her path differ from the one of all those tempted by the Dark Side.
