“Boiling Your Own Testicles In Vegan Butter” – Jared Leto Discusses Method Acting

Acting is more than just showing up on camera. It is a business that needs to sell a fantasy that draws viewers in and makes them forget they are watching a movie or series. One of the ways that many actors get into the swing of things is through method acting, which is an adventure all on its own. Still, there is an aspect of the film world that legendary method actor Jared Leto hates more, and that is auditioning.

A few fantastic actors in the industry are well-known for their method-acting shenanigans, including Robert de Niro, Christian Bale, and, quite famously, Jared Leto. We have all heard of some horror stories with actors who have gone through method acting, like losing weight, gaining it, staying in character the entire time and having to go to therapy because they are struggling to come out of it.

Jarrod Leto has gone to some absolute extremes for his roles throughout his acting career, including losing weight and living on the streets for Requiem for a Dream (2000), gaining weight to the point where he had gout that put him in a wheelchair for Chapter 27 (2007), losing weight and staying in character even when the cameras weren’t rolling for Dallas Buyers Club (2013), and blinding himself for his blind role in Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

Although you can’t really argue with the results that Leto has gained from his method of acting, it’s hard to imagine that anything else good comes from the process. Despite having put himself in a wheelchair and endangering his health, Leto has never once said that he hates his process, but he has said that there is something that he hates.

After Dallas Buyers Club came out in 2013, Leto chatted to W Magazine about his role and some of the past jobs that he has had, about his commitment to playing a trans woman. He said that if he hates anything about the film industry, it’s auditioning.

In a bit of vulgar honesty, Jared Leto shared that, in his opinion, the auditioning process is just as bad, if not worse, than “boiling your own testicles in vegan butter, or sawing off your butt lip and chewing on it like its tobacco.” It couldn’t be more clear that he hates it. Despite having worked on many huge movies, he hated the experience.

Leto suggested that a dentist’s waiting room is more inviting than an audition or casting office. “Every casting room has the worst vibe you’ve ever felt in your life.” During the interview, Leto recalled an experience in which he was auditioning for a role. He was shown into an empty room with an overturned couch, “and I was asked to hide behind the couch and shoot imaginary bullets at an unseen enemy.”

He recalled that he couldn’t even get through the audition before standing up and saying that Leto couldn’t continue it. Still, ironically, he got the part in the end. It’s difficult to say whether other actors hate the audition process as much as Leto does. Still, it’s funny that such an accomplished method actor hates auditioning so much.

Did you know that the legendary method actor Jared Leto hates auditioning?
