There was so much controversy surrounding The Flash from the moment it was announced that it didn’t really surprise anyone when it bombed at the box office. People have long wondered why DC and Warner Bros. Discovery decided to go ahead with The Flash while cancelling a slew of projects last night like it was fun. One of the tragically cancelled projects was Batgirl, and unsurprisingly, the film directors had some disappointed comments after watching The Flash.

When Warner Bros. merged with Discovery, there were tons of movies, series, animations, and even games that were cancelled and left in the dirt so that DC could move towards a more coherent plan that seemed more similar to Marvel’s slate.

One of the movies that made it through without being cancelled was The Flash. We aren’t going to talk about all the controversies surrounding Ezra Miller, the lead actor in the film, because you can check all those stories out on our site. But what we are going to talk about is the massive expectations that came with the film.

Coming out of Warner Bros. Discovery has a confident expectation to start with. Add to that they have high-profile actors like Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and, of course, Ezra Miller, and there are some pretty high expectations for the film to perform well. On top of that, a fantastic director like Andy Muschietti is added to the equation, and you should have a winning combination. But alas…

The Flash is now known as one of the biggest box-office failures of the DCEU, failing to perform at the box office for many reasons. It’s hard not to think about what might have been if we had seen one of the other projects that was cancelled instead.

Speaking of which, one of the cancelled films was Batgirl, and the circumstances of the cancellation were one of the strongest, causing fans worldwide to question what DC was thinking. When the decision was made to cancel Batgirl, the movie was already done shooting and in the post-production phase. This made the cancellation much more heartbreaking because the movie was close to being done.

It can’t even be argued that the movie wasn’t worth it for DC because it also had a bunch of fantastic names set to star in the film, including Brendan Fraser as Garfield Lynns / Firefly, Derek Siow as Ekin Tzu / Lucky Hand, Ed Wade as Simon Lipman, Elizabeth Conboy as Daisey Carson, Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl, and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman.

In an interview with Insider, the co-directors of Batgirl spoke up about their disappointment in the film and the fact that their film never even got a chance, which is even more heartbreaking when you think about how badly The Flash tanked.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fillah chatted about how their film was the opposite of The Flash, which might have given it an edge, mainly because of how badly The Flash did. “Our movie was very different than The Flash. That has a big fantasy component, ours was more grounded. More like Tim Burton’s Gotham City.”

When the duo watched The Flash, they couldn’t help but feel sad, wondering what could have been if their film had had a chance to be seen by audiences.

“We watched it and we were sad. We love director Andy Muschietti and his sister Barbara, who produced the movie. But when we watched it, we felt we could have been part of the whole thing. We didn’t get the chance to show Batgirl to the world and let the audience judge for themselves. Because the audience really is our ultimate boss and should be the deciders of if something is good or bad, or if something should be seen or not.”

Luckily, If the director duo ever got the chance, they shared that they would be happy to create another film with DC. “Our love for DC, Batman, Batgirl, Gotham City, it’s so big that, as fans, we could never say no to another project. If we got another chance to be part of it, we’d do it.”
