The PlayStation Portal Is Amazing, Except For This…

The infamous “Project Q” that Playstation fans have been waiting for since May this year finally has a real name, the PlayStation Portal, and even a price tag. However, some of the issues that people were expecting still need to be solved. It might lead to a couple of downsides. Confused? Let’s do a quick recap.

At the PlayStation Showcase, Sony announced a handheld device called Project Q. Still, the device has recently been revealed to be the PlayStation Portal. The PlayStation Portal is a remote-play device or a remote-play accessory, meaning it has no local processing happening because it isn’t a console. It is a receiver, a monitor with a modified DualSense controller chopped in half on either side.

There are some obvious upsides to a portable device of this nature and some unexpected downsides. @mkbhd released a great reel on Instagram that explained the pros and cons of the new device, explaining that it is a portable gaming device that is handheld, that the 8-inch screen is fantastic for a handheld device, and that the controllers have all the haptic feedback that the standard controllers have. Oh, and it clocks in at an affordable $199.

The main issues when it comes to this new portable device are the functionality and how it is limited because of the way that it has been built. Because it is nothing but a receiver, a gamer must already have a PS5 or get one to use this accessory. The PS5 has to be on and connected to the internet to work.

While it seems fantastic that you can experience PS5 games anywhere you go, “the more I look into it, the worse it gets,” according to @mkbhd. It wasn’t long before it was discovered that while the device is merely a receiver and has no processing capabilities, it also has no Bluetooth capabilities.

According to Sony, the only way to use wireless headphones is to use a “PlayStation Link compatible device”, like the $200 PlayStation Pulse Explore Earbuds that were dropped simultaneously with the PlayStation Portal.

What the popular YouTuber had to say about leaving off Bluetooth capabilities was intense. “That might be the most outwardly anti-consumer feature in a new gadget I’ve seen recently. That’s like, imagine if the new iPhone comes out and there’s no Bluetooth this year and there’s no headphone jack, so [to] use headphones there’s a new Apple wireless audio protocol that only works with Air Pods. Even for Apple that would be crazy.”

Some commentators agree that PlayStation is making a massive mistake by leaving out so many capabilities with their new device and even suggesting that a PlayStation Portable or a PlayStation Vita remake would have been better. “No Bluetooth. No local media storage. There is no cloud game streaming. Bad decisions all around.” – @idontgiveashiv_; “Why couldn’t they just come out with a new PSP smh [shake my head]” – @kburton_25

Other fans have pointed out that the device has an audio jack that you can plug your headphones into, so they think the audio issue is relatively small, considering there are alternative ways to use the device. Either way, the new PlayStation Portal looks fantastic, but it has a few kinks that need to be ironed out or lived with.

Is the lack of Bluetooth on the PlayStation Portal an issue for you?
