HBO’s one of the best-ever series True Detective is a dark ride into the film noir style of a murder mystery. The first season of True Detective was one of the biggest hits for HBO which was loved by critics and audiences alike and even though Season 2 didn’t really hit the mark Season 3 got back up and delivered what the fans wanted. True Detective has been off the air for a while now and finally, we are getting the fourth season of the series titled Night Country. So, while you wait for True Detective Season 4 here are some movies you could watch until then.

Zodiac (Showtime)

Synopsis: Based on the true story of the notorious serial killer and the intense manhunt he inspired, Zodiac is a superbly crafted thriller form the director of Se7en and Panic Room. Featuring an outstanding ensemble cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Chloë Sevigny, Zodiac is a searing and singularly haunting examination of twin obsessions: one man’s desire to kill and another’s quest for the truth.

Synopsis: Two cops (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) track a brilliant and elusive killer who orchestrates a string of horrific murders, each kill targeting a practitioner of one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Gwyneth Paltrow also stars in this acclaimed thriller set in a dour, drizzly city sick with pain and blight. Director David Fincher guides the action — physical, mental and spiritual — with a sure understanding of what terrifies us, right up to a stunning denouement that will rip the scar tissue off the most hardened soul.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Rent on Prime Video)

Synopsis: Disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) accepts an invitation to surreptitiously investigate a forty year old unsolved murder on behalf of the victim’s uncle, Swedish industrialist Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer). Meanwhile, tattooed hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), hired to investigate Blomkvist, discovers the truth behind the conspiracy that led to his fall from grace. Thrown together by fate, the unlikely duo uncovers a secret history of murder and sexual abuse festering beneath the veneer of Sweden’s industrial past, all the while drawing closer to a quiet evil waiting to engulf them both.

Insomnia (Prime Video & HBO Max)

Synopsis: Academy Award winners Robin Williams, Al Pacino and Hilary Swank star in a thriller set in the land of the midnight sun, where a the mind of even a tough cop can be threatened by Insomnia. Under the glare of the permanent Alaska sun, two veteran Los Angeles police officers close in on their suspect in the murder of a teenage girl. But when officer Will Dormer (Pacino) accidentally shoots his partner, their murder suspect, reclusive novelist Walter Finch (Williams), witnesses the shooting–and blackmails Dormer. Now, as an idealistic local detective (Swank) investigates the case, and the stakes rise, Dormer’s sanity begins to falter.

Fargo (Paramount+ & Showtime)

Synopsis: A reality-based crime drama set in Minnesota in 1987. Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a car salesman in Minneapolis who has gotten himself into debt and is so desperate for money that he hires two thugs (Steve Buscemi), (Peter Stormare) to kidnap his own wife. Jerry will collect the ransom from her wealthy father (Harve Presnell), paying the thugs a small portion and keeping the rest to satisfy his debts. The scheme collapses when the thugs shoot a state trooper.

No Country for Old Men (HBO Max)

Synopsis: Acclaimed filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen deliver their most gripping and ambitious film yet in this sizzling and supercharged action-thriller. Prisoners (Netflix)

Synopsis: Keller Dover ( Hugh Jackman) is facing every parent’s worst nightmare. The only lead is a dilapidated RV that had earlier been parked on their street. L.A. Confidential (Hulu & Plex)

Synopsis: Based on the seminal James Ellroy crime novel, L.A. Confidential is a hard-boiled tale of crime and corruption that takes place in 1953 when Los Angeles was being vigorously transformed into the metropolis of the future through the influences of population explosion, civic promotion and the pervasive reach of television. During this heady era, a cast of gritty, colorful characters on both sides of the law intersect in a web of corruption and deceit. Three cops, a call girl, a mysterious millionaire, a tabloid journalist fuel a labyrinthine plot rife with mystery, ambition, romance and humor. Directed by Curtis Hanson from his Oscar-winning script, L.A. Confidential features an all-star cast, including Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, David Strathairn, and Kim Basinger (in her Oscar-winning role).

Mystic River (HBO Max)
