8 Dark Comedy Movies Like ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ To Watch If You Liked the Film

The Banshees of Inisherin is definitely one of the weirdest dark comedies of this year. Directed by Martin McDonagh, the brilliant film follows two lifelong friends living on a remote island in Ireland. When one of the friends suddenly puts an end to their friendship, the other friend does everything he can to repair their relationship, but the film is not as simple as I just described it because for a lack of a better term, it is shocking. So, if you also liked Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson’s latest dark comedy film here are some more movies you could watch next.

The Nice Guys

Synopsis: Set in 1970s Los Angeles, down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired leg-breaker Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.

The Guard

Synopsis: The Guard is a comedic, fish out of water tale of murder, blackmail, drug trafficking and rural police corruption. Two cops (Gleeson and Cheadle) one an unorthodox Irish policeman and the other, a straitlaced FBI agent, must join forces to take on an international drug-smuggling gang.

The Hateful Eight

Synopsis: Nominated for 3 Academy Awards®. Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film takes place six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War. Bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) is racing through a blizzard toward Red Rock to have captured fugitive Daisy Domergue (Academy Award®-Nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh) hanged when he comes across another bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson) and a man claiming to be the sheriff (Walton Goggins). When the blizzard worsens, the four take refuge in a mountain stopover where they encounter four more strangers. Soon the tension from the close quarters and the bounty on Daisy’s head lead some to wonder if any of them will make it to Red Rock.

Killer Joe

Synopsis: From the Academy Award®-winning Coen Brothers comes The Big Lebowski – the hilariously quirky comedy-thriller about bowling, avant-garde art, nihilistic Austrians, and a guy named… The Dude. Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski doesn’t want any drama in his life… heck, he can’t even be bothered with a job. But, in a case of mistaken identity, a couple of thugs break into his place and steal his rug (you gotta understand, that rug really tied the room together). Now, The Dude must embark on a quest with his crazy friends to make things right and get that rug back! Starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, John Goodman, John Turturro and Steve Buscemi, The Big Lebowski has become a cultural phenomenon.

The Favourite

Synopsis: Early 18th century England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfil her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

In Bruges

Synopsis: Bruges (pronounced “broozh”), the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travellers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry (two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks.

Fight Club

Synopsis: Sick of his dead end, white bread, corporate career and disgusted with the empty consumer culture of his generation, a confused young man serendipitously meets Tyler Durden. Together they create a new club where young men come to relieve their frustrations by beating each other to a pulp. Two rules govern the club: no more than two men per fight and no one is to mention fight club to any outsiders. Reverse-psychology proves it’s power, as the latter rule instantaneously spreads the news of fight club throughout the underworld sub-culture. Tyler Durden, the ringleader, quickly becomes a cult hero of epic proportions, a new messiah for a dead generation. Meanwhile, Jack manages to get involved in a twisted love triangle with Tyler and a girl named Marla, who is also at odds with reality.
