Faith Ringgold

Let me start this post with a quote by Faith Ringgold.

You can’t sit around and wait for somebody to say who you are. You need to write it and paint it and do it.

Yesterday I learned about Faith Ringgold with a 2nd grade class. I had read her book Tar Beach but this time, I got to work on a story quilt! The main character in Tar Beach imagines she could fly. The world is hers. She is free to go everywhere she wants. My favorite part of the story is when the stars lift her up, illuminate her, and make her feel like she owns all that she sees.

I used to have dreams that I could fly. I would fly above the city lights. All was calm, quiet, and free. When I paint, I’m flying by the seat of my soul. When I walk and hear birds sing, feel a tree’s breeze, or see orange roses I feel like I own all that I see. I do because I am. I am so glad we had a chance to learn about Faith Ringgold.

Siempre,

Mireya
