Mumbai International Film Festival to begin from May 29th - June 4th 2022.

The Films Division complex, which also houses the National Museum of Indian Cinema is getting ready to host the 17th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) for Documentary, Short Fiction and Animation films.

The opening ceremony of the weeklong biennial film festival will take place at the Nehru Centre, Worli, while all the festival screenings will happen in the Films Division Complex, which has state-of-the-art auditoriums. (auditoria).

MIFF 2022 has got an overwhelming response from filmmakers across the world, receiving a whopping 808 film entries from 30 countries.

17th Edition of Mumbai International Film Festival Bets Big with Animation...

This year, Mumbai International Film Festival has showcased animated creativity from across the world! The Festival's attraction were the movies by Anim!Arte Brazil International Student Festival that just screened where students have presented the most beautiful animated movies with the help of Alexander Juruena Organisation.

Recently, one of Poland’s finest, O!PLA also screened their classy animated movies like Skull, Buddies and Story About Why Devil Limps. Director Piotr Kardas’ O!PLA has been another exciting part of MIFF. Animation flavour by Dhvani Desai for Mexico and Iceland has also been a sought-after special package for everyone.

A special screening by Netflix for John D Liu’s Green Gold, Tehzeeb Khurana’s Mighty Little Bheem, and Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama also made headlines at MIFF. Mighty Little Bheem is a beautiful trip to the Taj Mahal and after a very long time, the oldest favourites, the Ramayana stories are coming back on-screen! Apart from these extensive offerings, Mumbai International Film Festival also paid homage to the Late Jacques Drouin, one of the pillars for animation from Canada.

Interestingly, the festival also offered Animation Retrospectives by Regina Pessoa, Aleksandr Petrov and Janet Perlman. Myanmar’s Yangon Film School also saw its students present an array of exciting animation films. Additionally, the 17th Edition of Mumbai International Film Festival includes Masterclass and workshops by animation experts including Regina Pessoa and Krishna Mohan Chintapatta among others.

With an offering of over 400 films in its 17th edition, the highly anticipated Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) was inaugurated with a bang! The history of Soviet soldiers in the Second World War is a known, horrible, tragedy: Stalin’s casual indifference to human life as he hurled millions of Russian bodies at the German army on the Eastern Front. What, though, about those who survived – or were captured? Aliona Van Der Horst’s accomplished documentary follows the almost-unimaginable hardship of Sandar, a conscripted soldier from Moscow. He would never speak about that time, but now his daughter, Sana, attempts to trace his footsteps across Europe and back east to the Siberian gulag.

Sandar was imprisoned by the Germans at the Battle of Smolensk; haunted footage shows ruined, defeated troops being beaten with whips – although it was a victory for the Red Army, it led to Sandar’s internment in a giant POW camp. Hitler planned to starve the inmates here to death; for Stalin they didn’t exist as only war heroes were allowed in ‘Stalin the Cannibal’s’ USSR. The Nazis offered Sandar food if he volunteered to fight for them, but that was be just one of so many betrayals in his short life. ‘I was a slave solder to the Germans,’ he writes in his diary. But it was still better than the life he’d had before....There are several points in Van Der Horst’s film which remain unclear. How did a man of such limited education become an interpreter? Much is spoken of her parents’ relationship and late-life marriage, but Sana never really talks about their lives together after the Gulag. There’s mention of Sandar’s remoteness and lonely inaccessibility, but no real picture of the family. Such vagueness is perhaps to be expected, but it does leave the film without a link between Sana of today and Sandar of 70 years ago Referring to Solzhenitsyn’s fictional ‘Gulag Archipelago’, Turn Your Body To The Sun starts with letters and watercolors sent by Sandar from a forced labor camp in Siberia to Sana’s Estonian mother Tagira. Sana watches big-screen footage of her father’s twin tormentors: Stalin and Hitler. Sandar was sentenced to 10 years hard labor in a re-education camp in June, 1945 at the end of the war: the reason why will occupy the rest of the film, as Sana travels East to see where her father lived in such freezing hardship and what made him such a solitary, lonely figure for the rest of his life. He would never forget the cold there, or on the Eastern Front: turn your body to the sun, he would urge his wife and two daughters. Appreciate the warmth of life.

The filmmaker Sudesh Balan is a Communication Design faculty member at the IDC School of Design in IIT Bombay, of which he is also an alumnus.

at MIFF 2022 has been awarded to Bimal Poddar for his film ‘Radha’. A story set in Kolkata, ‘Radha’ revolves around an elderly lady and her relationship with a young boy who she has nurtured with all her heart. The award carries a trophy, certificate and prize money of Rs. 1 lakh.

‘Screaming Butterflies’ directed by Assamese Director Aimee Barua and produced by Mala Barua won the Silver Conch award for Best Documentary Film (below 60 minutes) in the National Competition section. The jury cites that the award is given to ‘Screaming Butterflies’ for its unflinching narration of the stories of the victims of cross-religious marriages who have bravely come forward to document their brutal victimization.

Dutch documentary film Turn Your Body to the Sun, which tells the story of a Soviet prisoner of war, has won the Golden Conch award for the Best Documentary Film at MIFF 2022.

The top award of the Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short Fiction and Animation Films was presented by Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari at the valedictory ceremony held at the Nehru Centre, Mumbai this evening in the presence of Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting L Murugan and other dignitaries.

The International Competition jury observed that the filmmaker has recreated the personal stories of World War II in such a fashion that it provokes the thought of the viewers. The jury noted that the innovative use of archival material is very sensitive and that the cinematic treatment is par excellence.

As many as 18 documentary films from Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Panama, South Korea and UK, besides India were in the International Competition section of MIFF 2022.

In the Short Fiction category, Malayalam film Saakshatkaaram shared the Silver Conch award with Gudmund Helsmsal’s Brother Toll a film from Faroe Islands of Denmark.

Closed to the Light directed and produced by Italian film maker Nicola Piovesan won the ‘Pramod Pati - Most Innovative / Experimental Film’ in this edition. Nicola Piovesan will get Rs.1,00,000 cash prize along with a trophy and certificate.

The curtains fell on the week-long Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) at a gala ceremony this evening.

The top awards in MIFF 2022 for Documentary, Short Fiction and Animation Films were presented by the Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshiyari at the valedictory ceremony held at the Nehru Centre in the presence of Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Dr. L Murugan and other dignitaries.

Addressing at the closing ceremony Governor Bagat Singh Koshiyari said even though his field is different, he loves Art and Culture.

Minister of State for Information, Dr L Murugan said that in the last seven days 100’s of short film and non feature films were screened. Every person who works in a documentary film is a superstar. He remarked that short films are short in time but give big message.

The Dutch documentary film “Turn Your Body to the Sun” has won the prestigious Golden Conch award in the International Category in MIFF 2022. Directed by Aliona Van der Horst, ‘Turn Your Body to the Sun’ brings to light the incredible life story of a Soviet soldier of Tatar descent, who was captured by the Nazis during World War II.

Polish film– The Prince In Pastry Shop won the Best Animation film in the International category. In the best short fiction category the prize was shared between the Brother Troll and Indian film Saakshatkaram.

The Award for the Best National Animation Film, was bagged by Kandittaundu directed by Adithi Krishnadas. Gerupatra won the Best National Short fiction film, whereas, Aimee Baruah directed The Screaming Butterflies won the Best National Documentary. The Best National Documentary film above 60 minutes was won by “Admitted”.

‘Prince in a Pastry Shop’ directed by Polish filmmaker Katarzyna Agopsowicz, won the Silver Conch for Best Animation Film in International Competition category. ‘Prince in a Pastry Shop’ is a seemingly humorous story about happiness. It is a philosophical parable about a couple eating cakes in a café touching upon fundamental issues that are close to everyone – the elusiveness of happiness. The award carries a Silver Conch, a certificate and cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs, to be shared equally between the director and the producer.

Documentary – a tool that transcends cultures and boundaries – Anurag Thakur

Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Shri Anurag Thakur in his video message said “documentary cinema creates the most significant impact. It not only educates inspires and motivates a change in the society, but also acts as a tool that transcends cultures and boundaries.” The Minister also mentioned that MIFF provides a platform where documentary film makers from all over the world get to exchange ideas and explore the possibilities of co-productions and marketing of documentary, short and animation films. There also will be a Special screening of ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ – which was the 1st animation film Co-produced by India and Japan & will be celebrating 30 years since its first launch....Animation lovers will be delighted to savors retrospective packages from three countries – Portugal, Russia and Canada. Films of Portuguese animator Regina Pessoa, Russian animation director, Aleksandr Petrov; Canadian animator and illustrator Janet Perlman will be a treat to animation lovers.

Students Film packages from reputed institutions like, National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) Pune, K R Narayanan Film Institute, Kerala will showcase the spirit of young talent. I can see in the photo how happily he is giving his service.
