New DOCTOR WHO Companion Is An Addition?

After making such a big deal about the new Doctor Who having a new companion in the form of Millie Gibson’s character Ruby Sunday, it was a surprise to see the news that Varada Sethu (Andor, Strike Back, Jurassic World: Dominion) had officially joined the cast as another companion.

This led to speculation that the character of Ruby Sunday would only last one season, which is never good news for anyone traveling with the Doctor as they don’t all have happy endings.

Now the people behind the show have been clear to point out that this isn’t the case. Instead the second season on Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Doctor will see him with two companions. Gibson’s Ruby is staying onboard.

Showrunner, writer, and executive producer Russell T Davies told Variety:

“Right now in the studio, shooting for 2025, we’ve got Ncuti, Millie and Varada fighting side by side – we need all three, because the stakes are higher than ever!”

Gibson made her promising debut as Ruby in the 2023 Christmas special.

The first full season with Gatwa in the TARDIS starts on May 10th on BBCOne and Disney+. The second season is currently in production for a 2025 debut. Sethu is expected to make her first appearance during that second season and not this year’s Christmas special, which will feature Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan as a guest star.
