Ahoy, there Outposters! This week, the HMS Last Movie Outpost is a touch light on shipmates. Stark is off on holiday (vacation) for the week, BobaPhil and Yoda are battling the shit life throws at us every now and then, and the Shawns are busy keeping you all entertained with 31 Days Of Horror. This leaves little old me to batten down the hatches and steer this magnificent beast against the tides of Holywood.
Thankfully, a hearty sea warrior by the name of Mr. Gary Sanchez, whom those who frequent the new Last Movie Outpost Discord channel will be familiar with, heard my call to arms and stepped aboard to fill the void. Here goes you filthy sea dogs!
How Did This Fly Under The Outposters Radar?
In a legendary move that can only be described as approaching epic, The Daily Wire announced last week that they are releasing their own version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, titled Snow White and the Evil Queen slated for release in theaters March 22, 2024.
The original Snow White, animated in the 1930s and probably one of the most beloved animated films in the history of Hollywood, was slated to be remade as a live-action wokefest by Disney for release in 2025. However, between the actors’ and writers’ strikes and the alarming public comments by the star of Snow White, Rachel Zegler, Disney has pulled back on the live-action version.
This new offer from the Daily Wire stars YouTube sensation Brett Cooper in the title role and it is probable, based on the teaser trailer drop, that she’s not going to address the audience for this film in a way that will be demeaning, or culturally tone-deaf.
The Launch of BentKey
The announcement comes with Daily Wire’s launch of BentKey. This app, designed to host the Daily Wire’s animated offering, is their answer to the woke children’s programming on offer from Nickelodeon, Disney, Netflix, and all the rest who are trying to propagandize the kiddies and win the future.
While BentKey already has about 150 hours of animated content available on the subscription platform, Snow White and the Evil Queen will be their first foray into live-action, children’s shows. And not a moment too soon.
Jeremy Boreing, the CEO of Daily Wire took dead aim at Disney in his announcement of Snow White and the Evil Queen:
“While Disney still uses Walt’s name, they have all but abandoned his legacy. It’s taken 100 years to build Disney. We know we aren’t what they are today, but we hope in time we might become what they were once upon a time: a little studio with big ideas and the courage to chase them.”
What are We to Make from All of This?
The height of Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro aside, this attempt by the Daily Wire to horn in on Disney’s ever-shrinking cultural territory comes after the Daily Wires has released several films, including Terror on the Prairie, Run Hide Fight, Shut In, and, of course, Matt Walsh’s big hit, What is a Woman?
None of these films have exactly burned up the box office, but they have generated a lot of critical engagement and dismissal from the establishment, progressive cultural machines that run the West right now.
The films and Daily Wire’s production efforts stand as a large example of what filmmaking might look like if the political right in the US ever got its act together in the culture wars.
The Daily Wire, also the home of Jordan Peterson, Candace Owens, and many other conservative commentarians, is part of a growing collection of studios, including Angel Studios, who took on Sound of Freedom after Disney passed on distributing it, that are cropping up to nibble at the Disney whale. There is an opening here in the culture wars and as long as Disney keeps stumbling, other more focused competitors will pick up the ball and run with it.
