Old Dads is now streaming on Netflix and it’s one of those movies that is made for the likes of us. Bitter, twisted, hate the modern world old people. The people who will never watch a TikTok video. The people that think modern music is just noise. I’d say about 95% of you Outposters.

Old Dads stars Bill Burr, Bobby Cannavale, Bokeem Woodbine, Kaite Aselton, Reign Edwards, Jackie Tohn, Miles Robbins, C Thomas Howell, Rachel Harris and Bruce Dern. It’s written and directed by Burr, so I was in from the start.

The Story

Three best friends become fathers, close to their 50s, and find themselves battling the modern world. Social politics, wokism and basically annoyed by anything made after 1987. Jack (Burr), Bobby (Connor) and Mike (Woodbine) own a company that’s being bought out.

Jack goes to pick up one of his kids and is 2 minutes late. Because of the strict school rules, he has to pay a fine. He ended up calling the mistress a c*** and apologised to her. Not just her, but all the parents in the school, who have all been offended.

Jack, at the behest of his wife, does this and grovels to the headmistress, who they need to get their son into a good school.

Everything with the sale of the company is fine until the deal goes south when they are presented with a video of them in a rental car. Yes, it seems rental cars video the drivers. The guys didn’t know this and basically are shooting the shit old-school style. This validates their Morality Agreement they signed and means they can be fired, from their own company.

A lot more goes on, but I won’t spoil the rest of it. In a nutshell, I laughed a lot. Mostly at how much like the guys I was.

Offensive?

Bill Burr stars, writes and directs Old Dads. Some people will already be pre-offended. If, like most of us, you have a sense of humour and find things like banter funny, you’ll enjoy this movie. I love banter, guys ribbing each other, in the most offensive way possible. It’s good for the soul.

These days, people have to tread carefully, so others don’t get offended. It’s a stupid system that’s come about. As kids we were taught ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me’, not anymore. Jack calls the mistress a ‘Stumpy c***’ and one of the dads takes offence to the word ‘stumpy’. What a time to be alive.

Overall

Old Dads is a funny movie. If you like the comedy of Bill Burr, you’ll have a blast. If you find him offensive, I’d stay away if I were you. Burr does call out the woke, the self-obsessed people who post their videos on every social network.

There are some great lines. Connor has an open conversation with his wife about her being cold. She gets angry and demands he explains himself, he replies:

You are cold. When your legs open I can hear the national anthem from East Germany!

I spat out my tea at this line, it was hilarious. There are other good moments and there’s also some great reflection about getting old and, sometimes, minding your own business.

I give Old Dads a solid 4 out of 5, as it is funny in places, well made and just a good movie. It’s not going to win any awards, but then, it’s not made for modern Hollywood. It’s streaming on Netflix.

On a personal note

Just wanted to say sorry for the quiet from me. I’ve had some stuff going on at home which hasn’t been good. I appreciate the messages though. I will be back to normal pretty soon.
