Gentlemen welcome back to Film Club. We have had a great response from you all and a total of 13 films to choose from! There are several on this list I’ve never even heard of, so I’ll be trying to work my way through over the next couple of weeks after I’ve watched the winning film.
Real Genius
When science whiz Mitch Taylor (Gabe Jarret) arrives at Pacific Tech as a freshman, he’s paired up with genius senior Chris Knight (Val Kilmer) to work on a laser project. Mitch initially doesn’t care for Knight’s slacker attitude but is eventually won over, and their friendship allows them to make new progress on the laser project. It’s only when the boys learn that the government intends to use the laser as a weapon that they start to question what they’ve actually been working for.
Hard Eight
Sydney, a veteran gambler, teaches John, a broke youngster, the ropes of gambling in Reno. In two years, John becomes Sydney’s protege. But things begin to regress after John falls for Clementine.
Strange Days
Lenny Nero sells dreams and hustles nightmares, dealing in real-life experiences through a new technology that makes every sensation immediate. But on the eve of the new millennium, Lenny and his street-savvy friend and conscience, Mace, are suddenly caught in a deadly fantasy of conspiracy, murder, and betrayal–plunging them into the bleak heart of the nightworld he has always inhabited.
The Search for One-Eye Jimmy
I couldn’t find a trailer for this, so instead you’ll have to make do with a clip and the synopsis to give you a feel for this Movie. It has an impressive cast consisting of Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sam Rockwell. Here’s the synopsis: Les is making a film about his old neighborhood in Brooklyn. One-eye Jimmy goes missing and Les switches to making a film about Jimmy and the people searching.
The Quiet Earth
Zac wakes up from a failed suicide attempt to find himself alone on Earth. Eventually, he finds two more survivors; the only link between the three is that they all were at the moment of death.
Sling Blade
tarring Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black and John Ritter, ‘Sling Blade’ tells the story of a quiet man named Karl who finally returns home 25 Years after committing an unthinkable crime. Once there, he’s befriended by a fatherless boy and his mother, but when his newfound peace is shattered by the mother’s abusive boyfriend, Karl is suddenly placed on a collision course with his past.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
This remake of the classic horror film is set in San Francisco. Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) assumes that when a friend (Brooke Adams) complains of her husband’s strange mood, it’s a marital issue. However, he begins to worry as more people report similar observations. His concern is confirmed when writer Jack Bellicec (Jeff Goldblum) and his wife (Veronica Cartwright) discover a mutated corpse. Besieged by an invisible enemy, Bennell must work quickly before the city is consumed.
Damnation Alley
Knocked off its axis in World War III, the Earth is in meteorological chaos. A group of survivors must cross the desert while freak storms and giant, mutated killer insects prey on them.
The Man From Earth
An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he has a longer and stranger past than they can imagine.
Jacob’s Ladder
After returning home from the Vietnam War, veteran Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) struggles to maintain his sanity. Plagued by hallucinations and flashbacks, Singer rapidly falls apart as the world and people around him morph and twist into disturbing images. His girlfriend, Jezzie (Elizabeth Peña), and ex-wife, Sarah (Patricia Kalember), try to help, but to little avail. Even Singer’s chiropractor friend, Louis (Danny Aiello), fails to reach him as he descends into madness.
Ex Machina
EX_MACHINA is an intense psychological thriller in which Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a 24 year old coder at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a retreat belonging to the company’s reclusive CEO, Nathan (Oscar Isaac). But when Caleb arrives he finds that he will have to participate in a fascinating experiment with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot woman, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Truths, emotions and motives are blurred as the relationship between Caleb, Ava and Nathan intensifies.
Doctor Detriot
A pimp (Howard Hesseman) on the run trusts his call girls to a meek professor of literature (Dan Aykroyd), who accepts the challenge.
Demon Seed
Child psychologist Susan Harris (Julie Christie) lives with her husband, Alan (Fritz Weaver), in a home operated by a computer program. When Alan invents Proteus IV, an artificial intelligence system capable of advanced thought, Alan’s obsession with technology strains his relationship with Susan. But Susan sees the true power of her husband’s invention when Proteus IV takes her hostage in her own home and plans to impregnate her in order to take on a human form.
