The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise has been a case of diminishing returns, quality wise. A great idea that feels, at times, stretched to breaking point.
The first one was a tremendous swashbuckler, with a perfectly pitched supernatural fantasy element. After this they just went slowly off the rails.

One of the most in-demand writers and producers in Hollywood teamed with long-time Pirates writer Ted Elliot to create a script. In a recent interview with the The Los Angeles Times he gave an update:
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he [Elliot] wrote a fantastic script, and the strike happened, and everyone’s waiting around.”
Both Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom were rumored to be potentially returning. The last movie ended on something of a cliffhanger involving the characters.
