Cage On Finally Seeing His SUPERMAN

Nicolas Cage finally got to see himself as Superman on the big screen. He had a very brief cameo in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash. In the much-discussed “Chronobowl” sequence, timelines and multiverses converge which allows Barry Allen to see different realities. He sees Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin, alternate versions of The Flash, a George Reeves Superman, Helen Slater and Christopher Reeve side-by-side as Supergirl and Superman, and more.

One alternate universe features Cage as Superman in a costume inspired by some of the leaked costume tests from Tim Burton’s scrapped Superman Lives from 1998. He is fighting a giant spider, a scene the notorious producer Jon Peters insisted was in the movie. The CG employed to demonstrate the bending, fluid nature of time has been commented on by moviegoers.

Cage spoke to USA Today about how it felt to finally make it to the screen as Kal-El:

“Well, I was glad I didn’t blink. For me, it was the feeling of being actualized. Even that look for that particular character, finally seeing it on screen, was satisfying. But as I said, it’s quick.”

Cage also revealed more about his brief flirtation with Clark Kent. He said the prep work for his Superman ended up, in part, in his performance in the romantic fantasy City of Angels:

“If you really wanted to know what I was going do with that character, look at my performance in City of Angels. I was supposed (to play) Clark Kent after that, and I was already developing this alien otherness playing this angel.

That is a perfect example of the tonality you would’ve gotten for Kal-El and for Clark Kent: Clark would’ve been a little more amusing, but Kal-El (had) the sensitivity and the goodness and the vulnerability and all those feelings that were kind of angelic and also terrifying.”

Cage was most recently seen as Count Dracula in Renfield, and has numerous projects in the pipeline.
