Nolan Shows OPPENHEIMER Footage

Arguably the greatest living Director today, Christopher Nolan, kicked off Universal’s CinemaCon presentation by taking the stage to talk about his upcoming Oppenheimer movie, starring Cillian Murphy.

The World War II biopic is about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, known as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the Manhattan Project and the creation of the atomic bomb which ultimately ended the second world war.

Now I Am Become Death…

As Nolan took to the stage and soaked up the inevitable huge applause from the crowd, he spoke about the man, the myth, and the movie:

“I’m here with a story in the story of J Robert Oppenheimer, I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes, twists and turns and ethical dilemmas.

The finest minds in the country were in a desperate race against the Nazis to harness the power of the atom in World War II. Picture those same minds realizing the possibility that they might set fire to the entire world, yet they went ahead and pushed the button. I wanted to be there and see what that might be like.”

Nolan added that he wanted to really try to take the audience into the mind and the experience of a person who sat at the center of all the most important movements in history:

“I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes. Like it or not, J. Robert Oppenheimer is the most important person who ever lived. He made the world that we live in for better or for worse. His story has to be seen to be believed.”

…The Destroyer Of Worlds

Nolan showed footage from the movie and by the sounds of things, like Dunkirk, he’s turned a historical story into a thriller.

The footage opened with Robert Downey Jr.’s character Lewis Strauss walking into a posh hotel dining room where a meeting is taking place to deliver the news that the Russians have a bomb.

“We’re supposed to be years ahead of them.”

The scene changes to Los Alamos, where a town is being built, which is clearly the site where the A-bomb tests will take place. Matt Damon is a high-ranking military official, Leslie Groves, who is pressuring Oppenheimer to get the bomb built and asks:

“Is there a chance when we push the button that we destroy the world?”

Oppenheimer grapples with the questions and the ethics saying:

“I don’t know if we can be trusted with the weapon, but I know the Nazis can’t.”

The Movie

Nolan is known for his preference of film for digital cinematography and for Oppenheimer has reteamed with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. The movie toggles between stark black-and-white and color and will be released on all of the premium large formats including Imax 70mm, 70mm, and Dolby Cinema.

Nolan also hinted that a full trailer will be attached to the soon-to-be-released Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.

Oppenheimer opens on 21st July and believe it or not, it’s in competition with Barbie of all things. What a time to be alive.
