Warner Want POTTER Stage Play Adaption

Warner Bros. Discovery have made no secret of the fact they want more Harry Potter. CEO David Zaslav singled out the IP as one of those that should be leveraged. Fantastic Beasts movies were diminishing returns, so they have been killed off. That hasn’t changed their mind.

Rowling was very smart to keep a huge degree of creative control over the world of Potter, famously turning down Spielberg to direct the movies as he wanted to make the kids American and move Hogwarts to the USA. So she needs to be convinced.

Puck News has reported that then-Warner Chief Toby Emmerich travelled to London in early 2020 and met with representatives of Rowling. One item on the agenda was a two-movie adaptation of the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Apparently they weren’t interested as the Fantastic Beasts franchise was still in flight. Since then Johnny Depp was forced out, Rowling has been targeted by a trans mob on Twitter for simply pointing out that women are women, and Fantastic Beasts have died.

Zaslav is now in the chair at Warner’s and according to the reports he wants Harry Potter And The Cursed Child as a priority.

Has enough changed to bring Rowling round? Harry, Ron and Hermione feature in the play, which is set nineteen years after the events of the 2007 novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Harry Potter is now Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic. Harry and Ginny send their younger son, Albus Severus, on the Hogwarts Express to begin his first year at Hogwarts.

Ginny is the editor of the sports section of The Daily Prophet. Hermione is now Minister for Magic, while Ron manages Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley alongside his older brother George.

On his first trip aboard the Hogwarts Express, Albus forms an unlikely friendship with Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Harry’s former nemesis Draco and his wife Astoria. Unlike his father, Scorpius is very polite and very nerdy. The school is stunned when, in a break with the tradition of Potters being sorted into Gryffindor, Albus is sorted into Slytherin alongside Scorpius. From there, things go very, very wrong.

The play is very long, so there is easily enough material for two movies. Of course, the three lead actors publicly sided against Rowling’s pretty non-controversial statements, so there is a question as to whether they return. A dump-truck full of cash may well change that.
