CONSTANTINE 2 Is Happening

That’s right, Warner Bros are making a sequel to 2005’s Constantine and Keanu Reeves is along for the ride.

Constantine earned $230 million globally, and since then, the character has made various appearances in DC animated movies, in an NBC series starring Matt Ryan, and later on Legends of Tomorrow. Strangely ‘he’ was also lesbian played by Jenna Coleman in Netflix’s Sandman.

You’re not Constantine. Stop pretending.

Friends Reunited

Reeves will reunite with the first movie’s director, Francis Lawrence who took over the Hunger Games franchise after the first movie. Lawrence is currently working on the prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. And he is also attached to direct the Netflix video game adaptation Bioshock

Keanu meanwhile is working on John Wick 4 and 5, The Devil in the White City and some crazy thing called BRZRKR.

Constantine And Abrams

J.J. Abrams has been developing a Constantine series for HBO Max, however, it will not be moving forward there but is possible it could find life elsewhere. His Constantine show which was first put into development back in 2021 was slated to… drum role please…  feature a diverse lead.

Since Warner Bros merged with Discovery, David Zaslav has been cleaning house. Part of this is down to cost cutting but mostly though it’s because WB have simply lost their way and have been delivering utter shite.

Another Abrams produced DC project, Madame X will no longer have a home on HBO Max and his Demimonde is also not moving forward. Abrams has been shopping around the animated Batman: Caped Crusader series because, yeah you guessed it, HBO Max has offloaded that too.

Thems the breaks J.J.

A black Superman you say? You’re out and take the rest of your “diversity” with you.

Who Is John Constantine

Constantine first appeared in Swamp Thing in 1985, and was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, John Totleben, Jamie Delano, and John Ridgway.

Constantine is described as a working-class warlock, occult detective, and con man from Liverpool who is stationed in London. He is known for his endless cynicism, deadpan snarking, ruthless cunning, and constant chain smoking.

Constantine was depicted as a sorcerer of questionable morality, whose appearance was based on that of the musician Sting. Alan Moore created the character after artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben, who were fans of The Police, expressed a desire to draw a character who looked like Sting.

Left: Constantine. Right: Sting.

Muh Authenticity

Thankfully back in 2005, people were not so insane. So when brown eyed, black haired Canadian Keanu Reeves was cast, most people just shrugged and took it on the chin.

With today’s Hollywood’s insistence of casting “authentic” actors and actresses, Keanu’s casting would surely… well, do nothing actually. You see Constantine is a white, English dude so nothing is off the table.

Recasting him as “diverse” in J.J’s reboot. Or a lesbian woman in Sandman, or even a talking penguin wouldn’t so much as make the Twitteratti lift a blue eyebrow. But hey, Constantine isn’t real so he can be portrayed as whatever they like. God help us if someone uses AI to change his hair colour.

Anyway, I really enjoyed Constantine and I thought Keanu was great fun. Hopefully we’ll get Tilda Swinton and Peter Stormare reprising their roles of Gabriel and the Devil too.
