Disney+ In For KING KONG

Warner Bros are gonna be pissed! The House of Mouse is muscling in on their territory. Disney Television is said to be in the very early stages of development on a live-action King Kong series for the Disney+ streamer.

Kong, of course, is now a staple in the Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures Monsterverse and after a standalone movie, Kong: Skull Island, and a starring role in Godzilla vs Kong – well, the clue is in the title!

Because this is Hollywood, this will apparently track the original story of the famous ape, whatever that means? King Kong Jr? Skull Island Babies? Teen-Ape?

The big guy has been around. His first appearance was in the novelization of the 1933 film King Kong from RKO Pictures. The movie premiered about two months later. A sequel quickly followed the same year with as the movie. The Son of Kong featured Little Kong.

Toho produced King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) and King Kong Escapes (1967), a film loosely based on Rankin/Bass’ The King Kong Show (1966-1969).

In 1976, Dino De Laurentiis produced a modern remake of the original film directed by John Guillermin. A sequel, King Kong Lives, followed a decade later featuring Lady Kong. In 2005 Peter Jackson proved his need for an editor with the remake of the 1933 movie before Warner Bros. took over and started to set up the Monsterverse with Kong: Skull Island (2017), which was set in 1973.

Little Kong

Paper Girls creator Stephany Folsom is writing this serialized action-adventure drama that apparently:

“…updates the classic monster story for the modern age and offers a return to Skull Island and the dawn of a new Kong.”

The series will look to use Merian C. Cooper’s original books, plus the latest King Kong stories from Joe DeVito to keep it separate from Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures in the no doubt incoming court case. James Wan’s Atomic Monster label is involved with Wan, Folsom, Michael Clear, Rob Hackett, Dannie Festa and Marc Manus executive producing.
