Nicholas Hoult (X-Men First Class), Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) and Cecily Strong (Schmigadoon) are the latest to sign up to the new fully-animated Garfield movie spinning up at Sony. Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson are already on board.

Garfield is a famous American comic strip created by Jim Davis. It was originally published locally as Jon in 1976, then in nationwide syndication from 1978 as Garfield.

The strip featuring the eponymous cat, his human owner Jon Arbuckle, and Odie the dog has been syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals. It holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip.

Set in Jim Davis’ hometown of Muncie, Indiana, the strip is basically a series of gags largely based around Garfield’s laziness, obsessive eating, love of coffee and lasagne, and his hatred of Mondays and diets.

Perhaps the best known adaptions of Garfield are the Garfield and Friends animated television series from CBS that was part of its Saturday morning children’s lineup from September 17, 1988 to December 10, 1994. There were also two live-action movies featuring Bill Murray as the voice of Garfield.

In this upcoming movie, Pratt voices Garfield whilst Jackson plays a brand-new character named Vic, said to be Garfield’s father. Which roles the new castmembers will play is not yet known.

The Emperor’s New Groove director Mark Dindal and writer David Reynolds are onboard and original creator Jim Davis will serve as an executive producer. Garfield is pencilled in for a February 16th 2024 bow into theaters.
