Dear Evan Hansen – You Will Be Found.

Greetings, musical friends, and welcome to this week’s Fangirl: Fulfilled journaling session! This month’s topic is the ever-popular musical-turned-book-turned movie, Dear Evan Hansen, and the song “You Will Be Found” from the soundtrack of same. Enjoy!

Fandom: “You Will Be Found – Dear Evan Hansen

Verses: Psalm 31:7-8, 14-15, 22, Isaiah 40:11, 27-31

Truth: When I feel invisible, overwhelmed, and hopeless, God sees my troubles and thoughts and will always come to rescue me as soon as I call to Him.

The Fandom: “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen

Okay, this song has DEFINITELY made me cry a few times with its sheer emotional power and beauty. Be careful adding it to your shuffled playlists, as it can take you by surprise in public places (ask me how I know ). The whole plot of Dear Evan Hansen is complicated to say the least, but there are some really beautiful messages and themes to it that are definitely worth embracing, and this song is one of them.

But for real though, this song! It starts out with Evan’s soulful solo, and then the other main characters join in, and it swells to multilayered harmonies interspersed with recordings of people reacting to his words online. Seriously, so beautiful I can’t

The Verses: being seen, rescued, comforted, and strengthened by God

Okay, so there’s one particular passage in Scripture that matches almost exactly with this song’s lyrics and underlying message! Here it is:

I will rejoice and be glad in Your faithfulness,
Because You have seen my misery;
You have known the troubles of my soul,
And You have not handed me over to the enemy;
You have set my feet in a large place...
But as for me, I trust in You, LORD, I say, "You are my God."
My times are in Your hand;
Rescue me from the hand of my enemies
and from those who persecute me...
As for me, I said in my alarm,
"I am cut off from Your eyes";
Nevertheless You heard the sound of my pleadings
When I called to You for help.
Psalm 31:7-8, 14-15, 22 NASB20

These verses are an emotional roller coaster that also matches the plot of Dear Evan Hansen. The psalmist goes from rejoicing to calm trust and asking God to rescue him, to recalling a time when he was certain that God couldn’t hear or see him at all. But one thing is constant, in this and all the psalms: God always finds us. He always sees, never forgets, and never fails. Praise God!

Even when the dark comes crashing through/ when you need someone to carry you/ And when you’re broken on the ground, you will be found.

  • Katy Perry – “Rise.”
  • Gryffin + SLANDER – “All You Need to Know”.

If you ask me, there’s enough truth in that first passage to feed my soul for a good long while every time that “You Will Be Found” comes through my headphones, but here’s another passage that also matches its themes:

Like a shepherd He will tend His flock,
In His arm He will gather the lambs
And carry [them] in the fold of His robe;
He will gently lead the nursing [ewes.]...
Why do you say, Jacob, and you assert, Israel,
"My way is hidden from the LORD,
And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God"?
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the LORD,
the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is unsearchable.
He gives strength to the weary,
And to [the one who] lacks might He increases power.
Though youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
Yet those who wait for the LORD
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up [with] wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.
Isa 40:11, 27-31 NASB20

In studying these verses, I discovered that the word translated as “weak” means something like “failure through lack of inherent strength, while “weary” means “exhaustion because of the hardness of life.” So that means that, regardless of what might be causing the negative emotions or overwhelm in my heart at any given moment, God not only sees what’s going on, He also is willing and able to rescue and restore my soul. Praise God!!

Application

In response to what we’ve uncovered through “You Will Be Found” today, here are some actionable “I will” statements that I’ll be living out irl:

  • I will cry out to the Lord when I feel alone, forgotten, invisible, overwhelmed, etc.
  • I will reach out when I’m in need and when I see others in need
  • I will tell God when I feel weary or weak and rely on Him for renewed strength daily

My Journal Pages

Below you’ll find some photos of my own pages in the Fangirl: Fulfilled devotional journal. I love how this journal gives you the ability to fully unpack a fandom in one sitting, then come back days or weeks later and re-digest what you’ve learned. You can purchase your own journal on Amazon for as little as $5 (with Prime shipping!).

As you can see, most of these pages are filled with writing, with just a little decoration as a foundation to add some visual interest. These are the very last pages in my journal, so that means I’ll be starting a new one very soon!
