Early Life

Gwendoline Christie’s full name is Gwendoline Tracey Philippa Christie. She blessed the world with her birth on October 28, 1978. She was born in a middle-class family in Worthing, West Sussex. Her father was involved in sales and marketing and her mother was a housewife. 6Dhe has two half-brothers and they grew up in a community near the South Down. 

As a child, she loved gymnastics but had to give up on it after a spinal injury. After her spinal injury, she started acting and developed a strong liking towards it. In 2002, she worked in a boutique in Brighton. 

She was told that she would never succeed as an actor because she didn’t look like the rest of them. She was inspired to continue her career as an actress after she saw Tilda Swinton in the film “Orlando”.

Career

Gwendoline Christie was the subject for Polly Borland’s photograph series titled “Bunny” from 2002 to 2008. 

Simon Callow has been Christie’s mentor since drama school. She has appeared in many theatrical performances throughout her career. These performances include Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline” in which she performed the role of the Queen, as Mag Wildwood in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and as Lucifer in “Doctor Faustus”. 

Gwendoline Christie made her film debut in 2007 with the short film titled “TheTime Surgeon”. She appeared in many other minor films and roles for several years.

The breakthrough in her career came in 2011 with the role of Brienne of Tarth in the second season of “Game of Thrones”. Fans of the show had proposed Gwendoline for the role before auditions because she was a fit for the role as the character is tall and muscular. Brienne is a popular character among the readers and they were impressed by Christie’s portrayal of the role.

The role however didn’t come as easy. She worked very hard for it. She gained 6.3kg of muscle mass, started wearing unisex clothes, and focused on developing a more masculine mindset. Her hard work paid off as she was selected for the role with no objection. She auditioned in the costume of Brienne. After the role was hers, she trained in horsemanship, stage fighting, and swordsmanship. 

Gwendoline Christie’s first appearance in Game of Thrones was in the third episode of the second season. The episode was titled “What Is Dead May Never Die”. 

From 2012 to 2013, she also appeared in “Wizards vs Aliens” where she played the main role as the character named Lexi. 

In 2015, she appeared in the film “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” as Commander Lyme. The same year, she appeared as Captain Phasma in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. The critics and fans appreciated her acting and the costume design but the fans were disappointed because she had only a small role in the film even though she was heavily promoted in the trailers.

She had the main role in”China Girl” in 2017. The same year she played the role of Captain Phasma in the sequel titled “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”. 

She received a Primetime Emmy Award and a Saturn Award for her role in the last season of GOT in 3019.

Personal Life

She was constantly bullied in school because she was taller than most girls. For the most part, Christie had kept her personal life private. Not much is known about her personal life apart from the fact that she is dating Giles Deacon. They have been together since 2013. She doesn’t have any children.
