About Stacey Abrams

Stacey Abrams is a politician/lawyer/voting rights activist/author based in America. She served as the minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2001 to 2017. She is also the founder of Fair Fight Action, which works to fight against voter suppression. She is a leader from the Democratic party of the United States. She is also the first African American woman to deliver “a response to the State of Union address” and the first African American women to become the female major-party gubernatorial nominee.

Early Life

She was born in Madison on 9th December 1973 as one of the six children of Carolyn and Robert Abrams. She was raised in Gulfport before her family moved to Atlanta, where Carolyn and Robert completed their graduate degrees. She graduated from Avondale High School and was hired as a typist/speechwriter for a congressional campaign while she was 17.

She graduated from Spelman College, where she studied Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies. She also has a Master of Public Affairs degree from Austin’s LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas and a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School.

During her youth year, she worked in the Youth Services Department at the Atlanta Mayor’s office and interned at the Environmental Protection Agency. She was also a part of protest where she joined others to burn the state flag of Georgia.

Career

Early career

Stacey Abrams worked as a tax attorney at the Sutherland Asbill & Brennan law firm after graduating from law school. She served as the co-founder of NOW Corp and Nourish, Inc.

Political Career

Her political career started in 2002 after being appointed as the deputy city attorney for the City of Atlanta when 29. She then ran for the “Georgia House of Representatives” in 2006 and for the Democratic Party’s primary election, which she won with 51% votes. She was also a representative of House District 89, where she served on Ethics, Judiciary Non-Civil, Rules, and Ways, Appropriations, and Means Committees. The House of 89 included portions of DeKalb County and the City of Atlanta.

She was chosen to succeed DuBose Porter in 2010 by the Democratic caucus. She outraised Virgil Fludd for the win. After being appointed as the minority leader, her first significant action was to reform the “HOPE scholarship program”, for which she collaborated with Nathan Deal’s administration.

Stacey Abrams proposed a bill in 2011 arguing that the proposal done by Republicans to increase the tax on cable service cutting income tax would cause the net growth in taxes paid by the people, but the bill failed later. She resigned from General Assembly in August of 2017 to put her focus on the gubernatorial campaign.

The 2018 Gubernatorial Campaign

Stacey Abrams ran for the “Governor of Georgia” against Stacey Evans in 2018, where Bernie Sanders and Our Revolution endorsed her. She won a nominee for the Democratic Party on 22nd May. She was the first black woman in the United States to be a governor nominee from a major party. She lost against the Republican Nominee Brian Kemp by over 55,000 votes, which she claims was not fair.

She announced the formation of Fair Fight Action in her ending speech and filed a lawsuit against the State Secretary and Election Board in charge of voter suppression. The case was still in progress as of March 2020. She has claimed that the election was not fair several times, and Kemp is not the right governor for Georgia.

She was chosen to deliver “response to the State of Union address” by Chuck Schumer on 29th January 2019, making her the first African American woman to do so. She then founded Fair Fight 2020 in 2019, which will be assisting the Democrats financially and technically. She was also selected as one of the seventeen speakers to jointly deliver the keynote address at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Fair Fight Action received $5 million by billionaire/ former mayor Michael Bloomberg after announcing his run for the presidential election in 2020.

Stacey Abrams is an award-winning writer of suspense romantic novels, including “The Art of Desire” and “Secrets and Lies.” She writes under the name Selena Montgomery. Her books have sold copies of over 100,000, according to Abrams. She has also published several articles on taxation and public policies. She is also the author of “Minority Leader: How to Build Your Future and Make Real Change“, which was published in 2018 and “Our Time Is Now: Power, Purpose, and the Fight for a Fair America”, which was published in 2020.
