Donna Vekic’s Early Life 

Donna Vekic was born in Osijek, Croatia, on June 28, 1996, to parents Igor Vekic and Brankica Vekic. Her parents were both athletes who were very active in sports. Igor, her father, was a former football player who came from a large football family in Croatia., where they grew up. Her mother, Barnkica, was also an athlete who competed in the 100m-400m hurdles.

She grew up with her parents and her younger brother Bruno Vekic, a footballer and aspiring pilot. Vekic, who grew up in a sporting family, dreamed of becoming a gymnast as a child and was already an exceptional active gymnast at six. But she eventually took up tennis and fell in love with it. Donna Vekic’s Professional Career

Donna Vekic made a big impression at a young age with her powerful serve and booming groundstrokes. She began her career on the ITF Circuit in Croatia, where she competed in her first event. Later that year, in 2011, she won one singles title and one doubles title.

In the end, the year 2012 had a lot in store for her. It was the beginning of Donna’s professional career as she reached the final of the first WTA main draw in Tashkent. She was also the youngest player to make it to the WTA final at the age of sixteen.

Similarly, Donna began the 2013 season by competing in the Australian Open, where she defeated Andrea Hlavackova in the first round. She, however, lost in the second round in straight sets by former world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

Donna Vekic began 2014 by competing in the Shenzhen Open, where she was defeated in the first round by third seed Klara Zakopalova. She did, however, win her first career WTA title at the Malaysian Open, defeating top seed Dominika Cibulkova in the final. Unfortunately, the Croatian tennis star had a string of bad luck after that. Donna lost in the first round of the French Open, the final round of the Madrid Open, the second round of the Baku Cup, the first round of the US Open, and the first round of the Tashkent Open.

Donna’s ranking dropped to No. 177 after a poor 2014 season and a shaky start to 2015. She then competed in the ITF event in Istanbul as the top seed but lost in the quarterfinals to Margarita Gasparyan, the sixth seed.

However, Donna’s bad luck continued in the second half of the season when she failed to qualify for Wimbledon or the US Open. Fortunately, she won her first top-40 match of the season in the French Open, defeating Caroline Garcia, Bojana Jovanovski, and Ana Ivanovic. She finished the season ranked No. 105.

Donna competed in 2016 Australian Open and was defeated in the first round by qualifier Naomi Osaka. Meanwhile, she advanced to the quarterfinals of the San Antonio Open, defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Kiki Bertens but losing to Tsvetana Pironkova

From February to August, Donna lost in the first round of ten consecutive WTA tournaments, including the French Open. Similarly, she reached the final of the ITF tournament in Saint Petersburg in September but was defeated by Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

She did, however, win at the ITF Sharm El Sheikh after reaching the year’s ITF final. She won her sixth ITF title after defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo in the final.

Donna won her second WTA title in June 2017 at the Nottingham Open, defeating Johanna Konta in three sets. Donna made it to the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the US Open.

Donna Vekic also made her first appearance in the world’s top 50 in July, reaching a career-high singles ranking of world No. 45 before finishing the season at No. 56. Donna had a similar year in 2018, reaching the semifinals in Tokyo after defeating top-10 players and finishing the season ranked No. 34.

Vekic’s 2019 season got off to a strong start in Brisbane, where she advanced to the semifinals. Donna could not maintain her winning streak at the Australian Open, as she was defeated in the second round by Kimberly Birrell.

Fortunately, she bounced back at her next tournament, reaching the St. Petersburg Trophy final, which was her most significant career. Furthermore, after losing in the quarterfinals to Naomi Osaka in Stuttgart, Vekic only played two matches.
