Smart City Columbus to Gamify Frankly County, Ohio with QR Code SCANVenger Hunt

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Scanvenger to kick off a six month Citywide Scanvenger Hunt. The hunt will take place throughout the city of Columbus and surrounding business districts.

The goal is to use the SCANVenger Hunt gamification platform to drive foot traffic to local businesses and prompt engagement through experiential marketing that will lead to sales, location awareness as well as repeat customers.

During the Hunt each shopper will download the app and use the QR code reader to scan the SCANVenger Hunt window clings located at the entrance of each participating business. Once the code has been scanned shoppers will see a question on their phones that will be related to the businesses’ product or service. Depending on what the question is, the shopper may have to enter the store to find the answer or the question may be general enough for them to guess or find it outside of the establishment.  Once the question is answered correctly the shopper will level up into different categories for their chance to win prizes.

Sponsors and participating businesses will provide prizes for each business district along with many high-dollar grand prizes to be given away at the end of the six month SCANVenger Hunt. Prizes may include Amazon gift cards ranging from 10 to 100 dollars, special deals from local stores or electronic devices and wearables.

Approximately every two weeks participating shoppers throughout Franklin County will be alerted via push notification whenever there is an activated business district. Shoppers will then be able to visit the participating businesses, scan their codes to unlock the task/question and earn points as they learn more about each establishment.

Although the SCANVenger Hunt gamification platform is new to Franklin County it has been used by many cities such as Dallas, Phenix, DC, San Jose’, Orlando and New Orleans, to name few. The SCANVenger Hunt platform has also won awards in Denver from the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) and from the National Association of Counties (NACo) for Montgomery Counties’ buy local campaign, Think Twice.

The Montgomery County Think Twice SCANVenger Hunt lasted six months and kicked off in Dayton, Centerville, Kettering, Oakwood, Miamisburg and Clayton. The award-winning program was reported to have contributed to the increase of countywide sales tax revenue.

Mall properties such as the Greene Town Center in Beavercreek, Ohio have used the platform for several years to drive traffic to their stores. “SCANVenger Hunts at The Greene have been a marketing home run for us! We have seen increased sales and traffic for the participating stores and our customers love being a part of them.” Kelli Kooken, Marketing Director, Greene Town Center.

The platform has also been used overseas in Germany, Australia and Japan where the QR code adoption rate is much higher. According to The Economist, QR codes in China enabled $1.65trn of mobile payments in 2016.

“QR codes are huge in Asia and Apple has already responded by adding functionality to the iOS 11 camera to access QR codes,” stated Sean Fields, Director of Business Development for SCANVenger Hunt. “We’ve watched the mobile trend closely over the past 7 years and projected the need for users to access content on their devices would drive the demand for a convenient method of doing so, hence scanning QR codes”, he continued. “We felt it was appropriate for the nation’s first Smart City to introduce QR codes to the community in a way that both educates users about the technology and benefits local businesses.”
