What are the services you use the most (or are looking forward to using) from the Columbus Chamber?
We love having a resource to get more involved in the “Cbuzz” through Chamber events and networking opportunities. The ‘Thought Leadership’ part of the website is also pretty cool. We intend to be a part of the online community and use that platform to share our knowledge and insights on a variety of construction-related topics.

How do you stay engaged with trends that you see in your industry?
Whew, big picture construction trends we stay in tune with the industry giant, Engineering News Record. However, like the real estate business, it is all local. We stay up to date through involvement with each local trade, community, and civic groups to respond to their needs.

What is your company culture like?
I strongly believe that our culture is what really sets us apart. HGC is recognized in the industry as incredibly innovative and progressive. We thrive on a spirit of collaborative ingenuity and future- focused thinking. We make every attempt to hire the right people and just let them be awesome.

People will perform at their highest when they’re engaged and feel like their work is important— because it is important. We don’t need to force people to develop; people come on board with us and want to grow. We believe in letting culture get the work done, rather than employing a system of strictly outlined corporate policies. If our employees have to go back and actually read the handbook, something is not right.

Lastly, I respect our employees as whole people. I understand that time is valuable and really respect the time our employees invest in HGC. Most people spend more time at work than they do on almost any other activity so we must provide the tools and the backdrop to make it meaningful and important.

What does it take to be a successful employee at your company?
To be a Successful Employee at HGC, you must be a self-starter- willing to work and thrive in a collaborative, open office environment. The client comes first. Making the client the main character in the story and exercising humility is key- you gotta check the ego.

People with an entrepreneurial spirit seem to thrive here as well. Don’t be afraid to take on challenges and be prepared to embrace change. We will provide you with the tools for success and let you got be awesome.

What makes Columbus such a great place to do business?
We’re thrilled to set up shop in Columbus. For years, we found ourselves driving up and down I-71 working on cool projects and meeting really great people. Columbus has such a wealth of structures plus the new work coming on line is unmatched. Things like that happen in progressive cities, so to sum it up, the people!

What pieces of advice have you found to be the most helpful since starting your career?
My grandfather always said, “A happy wife is a happy life.” And somewhere along the line I picked up on the phrase “vision without execution, is a hallucination!”

How do you achieve a work/life balance?
Funny you ask as I’m happily answering the questions at 9:30 PM on a Sunday evening. For whatever reason I really enjoy pulling my thoughts together at this time. Technology is a real help in making the most of personal and work activities.

Where is your favorite place to have a meeting outside the office?
Outside in general!
