The vocalist passed away when she was 75 years old. Cancer and Rita Lee had a protracted battle, but in the end, cancer prevailed and claimed Rita Lee’s life.

After receiving a lung cancer diagnosis in 2021, Lee reportedly died at her So Paulo home “surrounded by the love of her entire family.”

A public wake will be held on Wednesday at the planetarium in So Paulo, where the singer-songwriter was born, according to a statement from her family.

Rita Lee was born in So Paulo, Brazil, to Charles Fenley Jones, an American-Brazilian dentist who is descended from Confederate soldiers, and Romilda Padula, a Brazilian pianist.

Rita studied classical piano under renowned pianist Magdalena Tagliaferro. The typical teenage debut ball was substituted with a drum kit at the songwriter’s request.

In the 1960s, Lee’s vocal skills made her famous all over the world thanks to the influential band Os Mutantes, one of the fundamental players of the so-called Brazilian Tropicalism.
